  1. Reading coffee grinds or using any method modern or ancient to predict the future or the unknown (ghayb) is haraam as only Allah has knowledge of the future, the unknown, the unseen etc (ilm al ghayb).

  2. Reading cup is just an entertaining silly activity. the Holy Quran mentioned nothing about it as Haram or Halal.
Haram in the Quran is very limited and the thousands of Haram rules that you see around is invented by religious scholars throughout the islamic history and should not be taken for granted.

  3. Only Allah knows the future. “And with Him [i.e., Allah] are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him.” [Quran 6:59] As well as (what means): “Say (O Muhammad): ‘None in the heavens and earth knows the unseen except Allah…'” [Quran: 27:65]
Therefore, any form of fortune telling, including palm reading, astrology, tarot or coffee sludge reading, etc., is not permissible in Islam.
    Peace be upon you.

  4. More than a decade ago while I was in Saudi Arabia I read an article which stated that : 500 years ago from now, anyone found drinking coffee in Mecca was punished with lashes as it was declared haram. It was quite a surprise to know that.
People in those days in Arabia wondered when pure milk is available, why does someone drink something else? Is it intoxicating drink? All sorts of funny doubts. Decades later when they were convinced about coffee, it was permitted. In fact the Ottoman rule had made coffee a favourite item. Maybe your question pertains to this point.
