  1. Cold brew coffee is such an interesting phenomenon. It is a super easy way to make coffee that requires minimal labor per cup yet coffee shops charge much more than just a normal cup of coffee. Maybe the caffeine content is higher. Maybe the flavor is more intense. Maybe they think they’ve perfected the recipe. But one has to wonder why a pour over costs $3 while cold brew usually costs at least $3.5 and sometimes $4 (as is the case at a coffee shop in my neighborhood).
    Alas, there is some mystery behind cold brew and customers are willing to shell out more for it. Take into account the fact that it is delicious and most people won’t take the time to make it at home (super easy, though) and you’ve got a product from which you can make quite a bit of money.

    If people won’t buy Narino at the rate that Starbucks is selling it- then they’ll buy something else.
    If enough people do that- Starbucks will reduce the price- or sell something else. They will also lower production standards or increase efficiency to get more buck per bean.

  3. With the prepping of cold brew you’re facing a trade off between labor costs and cost of goods going into the process.
    It will take your employees less time to put ice in a cup and pour cold brew over it when you compare it to preparing a latte or a cappuccino.
    At the same time the ratio of coffee:water is very different from hot brew to cold brew. Thus, the cost of the coffee going into each cup of cold brew is higher to start with.
    I’d be curious to hear from someone at Starbucks about their exact coffee:water ratio on site.
    Andrew also has a very good point, and that is, cold brew is still pretty new and businesses can experiment with how much they can charge the consumer.
