Why is no food allowed for 4 hours prior to abdominal MRI, no coffee, tea at all? How does fasting influence the MRI results? Is water or non brown cola juice also a no-go?
You can check the answer of the people under the question at Quora “can you drink coffee before an mri“
4 — 6 hours prior to an abdominal MRI, food and drinks (including water) is not allowed.
This is advised so that MRI offers detailed and correct images of internal structures which may be hindered by food and peristalsis.
If they want to check your gall bladder you need to fast for 4 hours, any food you eat will cause it to empty and be hard to evaluate. You may drink a bit of water to take essential medication but nothing else.
Hello again.
If you’re being asked to fast and abstain from caffeine, you should do precisely that. The fasting ensures that your intestines won’t be in constant motion (digesting your dinner) during the scan. As for the caffeine, that can increase your heartrate and raise your blood pressure, which could compromise some of the scans that the radiographer might want to do.
Water is fine to drink before the scan, but make sure to visit the bathroom before you go into the magnet, because the scanning might take an hour or so. It’s best to avoid sugary drinks – those count as “food” inasmuch as they need to be digested.
As I said previously, there’s nothing to worry about. Just follow instructions, and raise any concerns you have before you enter the magnet.
BW, PFT.
Any food or liquid, that may interfere with proper visualization, is better avoided. Go in early morn, for scan
Because images of gastrointestinal contents might obscure important findings on the scan .
Things are the way they are, because that is how theyre supposed to be.
