  1. The experience of taste is relative, and is essentially more of a response of the person at that moment rather than an absolute.
eg. Bite into a bitter gourd or a gooseberry and chew it. Then drink a little water!!! Lo.. the water is sweet.
Eat the sweetest jalebi or burfi..chew it properly. The water has no taste!
After having a really spicy food (Mexican) or Andhra … drink water. That is plain relief!!
These are instances when water is consumed after a certain type of food intake. The taste varies.
But in the absolute sense, if water tastes bitter when consumed alone, then it has acid content. Check the pH. It will be less than 6. Very bad for health.
The second cause is a little alarming. It can be due to the presence of ecoli,..i.e ingress of septic tank water into the ground source.
Ground water can change characteristics all of a sudden. This is mostly due to geological changes within the earth. But there are instances where the water from adjoining septic tanks etc. infiltrates the water source.
If water tastes bitter when consumed alone, please get the chemical analysis and microbiological analysis done ASAP.

  2. I agree with most of what others have said. Please first see the most common—sense reasons for your water to taste bitter before considering my answer.
However, this is something that I experienced after I was given radiation therapy to treat cancer. For a few months after those treatments I kept developing internal abscesses filled with infection. Every time those infections would flare up such that infection would enter my bloodstream, most liquids would taste awful. Water was especially bad as there was a bitterness that really stood out. The first time this happened, I actually assumed the water filter for our refrigerator had gone bad and replaced it, but found that didn’t help. Each time there was a flare up, the bitter tastes preceded any high temperature and/or vomiting by about a week.
If your body is undergoing some major stressor, or if you have reason to believe you are developing an internal infection, this could be an early sign of your system turning septic. If you are under close care of a physician this may be worth mentioning.

  3. Simple exemple did anyone ever ate an apple an suddenly drink water right after ? a problem with the water softener could be evident .another fact that could be possible and i should quote at a specific location on the distribution pipe inside the house or it could be even outside the building,it could be a cross connection that could alter the taste .also on a specific location on this water distribution pipe ,it could have different type of pipe materials that is use ,like galvanized pipe joint with copper pipe, this will create an electrolyzed action (ion negatif & positif ion ,so if you drink any water when that’’pocket’’ of bitter water has arrived at the tap will give a nasty taste as well a turbide color . you don’t have to make it difficult to pinpoint only a bad material use between the faucet and the pipe is enough to alter a bitter taste suddenly for a short period of time .A low speed of the water in the piping will make it worst like lower then 10 ft/sec. please take a professionnel to avoid that problem to make it difficult to pinpoint and costly to repair construction structure (wall ceiling even below floor ) .please comment if any question thanks . sorry for my english.

  4. There may be additives in the water or its causing something you’ve put in your mouth earlier is suddenly tasted. Some medications interfere with taste as well

  5. I’ve experienced this a lot. I’m sure it has to do with food residue on your lips or on the glass.
If you fully clean your lips and thoroughly wipe the rim of your glass, do you still get this sensation?

  6. Poor dental health and poor hygiene are other potential causes of a bad taste in the mouth. Dysgeusia is the medical term for an impaired sense of taste. It can result in unpleasant taste sensations ranging from metallic to salty or bitter. The bad taste may also be described as foul or rancid.
