  1. Well, to start with, coffee shops aren’t only found in Amsterdam. They can be found all over the Netherlands. Amsterdam being the capital, is the most popular city people know in the Netherlands and as a result, the one they visit to see the coffee shops.
Years ago, the Dutch government passed a law allowing the sale of ‘soft drugs’ in what is today called coffee shops and in many ways, it has helped reduce criminality in a lot of big cities as well as played a major role in boosting the tourism sector.
Try to imagine if drugs like cannabis or marijuana were illegal in the Netherlands, this would have opened up a market for illegal drug dealers to sell whatever it is they sell to the populace as well as tourists. By making it legal to sell those soft drugs in coffee shops, the Dutch government has been able to not only take away power from drug dealers (and also avoid territorial wars amongst drug dealers which would have made the country unsafe) but also establish the Netherlands as the world wide capital of the cannabis culture. The Netherlands is generally a tolerant country and even though I am not a smoker, I have to agree that making it legal to buy and sell ‘soft drugs’ in coffee shops has played a major role in making Amsterdam and other major cities in the Netherlands quite safe and to an extent ‘COOL.’

  2. We have something that is called gedoogbeleid that means you can buy your weed at coffeeshop not more then 5 grams at a time. But the coffeshops cant actually buy the pot well the coffeeshop cant have more then 500 grams in the building that they sell to their customers. Its pretty silly actually they should have legalised it completly and put taxes over it. Anyway Google gedoogbeleid and see if you can find some english translations about how the law works. I stopped smoking pot a long time ago. And i never really got into the legal stuff. Just googled it myself really funny the coffeeshops arent allowed to sell too people who arent residents of the netherlands wauw Wahahhahahahhahaha almost every coffeeshop i went too sold to tourists. its also a very old law it is from 1976 they should update that.

  3. In general, the view in the Netherlands is that the use of marijuana, when it causes problems, is a public health issue, like alcoholism and cigarette smoking. The authorities therefore take the view that it is better to regulate this trade than to leave it to criminals, who will likely also deal with more dangerous drugs. Regulating the sale of cannabis products makes it possible to monitor quality and reduce crime. People who get into difficulties are more visible and are more likely to get the help they need. Plus it generates revenue from taxes. What’s not to like?
