In a word, marketing. Unbleached coffee filters are supposed to be better for the environment. Saving the planet is an honorable endeavor. Wouldn’t you be willing to spend a few cents more to help save the planet? Coffee filter makers are betting that you are.
Economy of scale. I’d guess more white (bleached) filters are sold, so that’s why they are cheaper. And given that my coffee will be running through them, I’m wiling to pay a bit more for this seemingly healthier option.
Two reasons I can think of: Demand and Marketing.
In the case of unbleached coffee filters, demand is lower than bleached filters so companies charge more to help make up the difference.
As far as marketing, companies know that the people more likely to buy unbleached coffee filters are more likely to spend more for them. This is because the people who buy those filters are typically doing so in an effort to reduce the impact bleached filters have on the planet (and possibly our health?). As such, they’re typically willing to spend a little extra to achieve that goal and so the companies selling them will charge extra because they can.
In a perfect world the less work the less money. Unfortunately we are not perfect. There is money to be made in saving the planet. Bleached coffee filters are unnatural so will take longer to dispose. The unbleached coffee filters are better for the environment so there for they are also a few cents richer to the fat cat in corporate society.
I apologize for the answer I wish there was a better way of saying it. Have a good day.
