  1. Since an Americano is made from a shot of espresso + hot water, and is roughly the size and strength of a conventional American cup of drip coffee, I think we can break your question, “why do people like Americano coffee”, down into two: Why might someone choose an Americano over a conventional American coffee (drip), and why might someone choose an Americano over an espresso. An espresso is intense and drunk quickly. Sometimes one wants to sip a larger volume of coffee. So then why not an American style cup of drip coffee? Initially the Americano was probably developed in Italy because it can be made from the equipment on hand, namely an espresso machine with a dispenser for hot water. But today, even with a drip coffee maker on hand, an Americano is attractive as a different flavor. Even if the total volume and strength is the same, the flavor and mouthfeel are not. An Americano is unfiltered, leaving more dissolved solids and oils than American drip coffee. It’s closer to the flavor and mouthfeel of French press coffee.

  2. Not everyone enjoys drinking strong coffee.
My wife, for example, loves the aroma of freshly-brewed coffee, but straight espresso is too bitter and caustic. So she takes it watered down to a level she enjoys. Since we’ve been together she has gradually come to enjoy stronger and stronger coffee (where she comes from coffee tends to be fairly weak and extremely sweet), but I think that americano-type drinks will always have the best balance of flavour and strength for her palate.
Personally, I would only ever drink americano if I wanted a long black coffee and the place I was ordering from could only make espresso-based drinks. I typically add an extra shot (unless I simply order a cappuccino instead), as americano doesn’t necessarily have to be weak. Not ideal, but still better than no coffee in a pinch.

  3. For many years my standard order was a 16 oz, 4 shot Americano with non fat milk. I liked the strong flavor of the 4 shots of espresso mellowed by the dairy. Also cheaper than a cappuchino.

  4. Americano – boiling water is poured on top of the espresso shot. This “breaks down” the espresso shot – making the finished coffee similar in taste and texture to a black drip or cona coffee – filter/drip coffee style which is popular in America (hence the name)
Arguably if you want a non-espresso coffee you should have one that isn’t made with espresso
if you wanted a new car that looks like a Mercedes – it would be more economical to buy an ACTUAL Mercedes rather than to buy an alternative brand then proceed to change all the badges
What is the justification for charging “extra” ? You are paying the same price as other espresso drinks except you are breaking it down make it not like espresso
You could ask for fillet steak to be used in ground beef in your taco – you could not tell the difference (especially with all the seasonings) – it is still ground beef. however the cost of the meat is a lot more
