  1. Okay so the character of Grimes is FICTIONAL.
He is BASED OFF John Stebbins, a specialist who was a clerk, that surprised everyone when he was put into action. He was awarded the Silver star.
Then he returned home and raped his 6 year old daughter. Because of this the Army insisted Stebbins be wrote out of the movie, and replaced by the fictional Grimes.
Now Grimes (Stebbins) was a specialist (automatic promotion to specialist in the army in two years.) so he probably had been in the army for about three years, and had spent most of that time working as a clerk typist. If we assume he enlisted in 1990, he was not in Panama because he was not in. If we assume he joined the army right out of high school, that would put him in the army around June of 1990. 14 weeks of infantry OSUT is July, Aug, Sept, and part of Oct. three weeks of jump scho…

  2. Because he never existed. Grimes was a fictional character.
The actions of Grimes were based on the real soldier John Stebbins. However, Stebbins was no real-life hero; the year before the movie was released, he had been convicted of raping a 12-year old girl. Whether Stebbins was any good at making coffee, I have no idea.
Rather than portray a child-rapist as a hero, the producers decided to replace Stebbins with a fictional character.
Having said that, I am sure that in every army, there are people who become expert at finding ways to avoid unpleasant duties — like, say, going into combat. And I’m sure that many of these eventually run out of luck and get sent into battle despite their best efforts. And it’s possible that a few of them rise to the occasion and punch well above their weight, astonishing themselves and everyone around them.

  3. Not everyone goes to war. I was with the 24th Infantry Division during Panama. The 24th Infantry Division was part of the XVIII Airborne Corps. We were supposed to be a heavy quick reaction force, buy we were left behind. I signed out on leave that morning, and I thought and was possed to be left behind.
For Desert Storm, we were deployed. As we were leaving, a lot of rangers at Hunter Army Airfield were pissed because we were going, and they weren’t.
