Why am I not able to poop in the morning while preparing to leave the house, but once I leave the house, I really feel like I need to poop? Sometimes I would even wake up 2 hours earlier in order to have enough time to actually be able to poop but even that wouldn’t help
Your digestive system is in a quiet state while you are asleep and takes some time to resume a daytime level of movement (peristalsis). That said, if shifting your activities to a time 2 hours earlier did not change your pattern, then I agree with Dr. Sie that there may be an emotional component to your pattern.
A2A.
Being on the move leaving the house – when looking for a toilet can be an embarrassment – might trigger something in you:
by being physically active (or does it happen when you are driving or taking the bus/subway too)?
something taking place in your mind? I wouldn’t know about that, people make up convoluted theories about one wanting to punish oneself by putting oneself in an uncomfortable situation etc. etc., too complicated for me (not a psych, just a simple retired internist).
You can’t possibly go to the toilet on DEMAND and that has happened to me NO end of times and it is frustrating when you have to do an ABOUT TURN and go back to the house. Try getting up a little earlier than you usually do and do some exercises – EXERCISE gets the bodily functions up to par again. Try changing your daily diet to a more healthier diet.
I’m the opposite. So are my brothers. At the last family get together, we somehow got onto this topic. All three of us can go all day long and not have to poop. But as soon as we get home? As soon as that front door closes behind us, we all have immediate urges to go. We could only conclude that it may have had something to do with us getting conditioned as children. There were 5 kids and 1 bathroom so there was always a mad rush.
I answered a poop question, and then more came. So I answered them. Becoming a poop expert is hardly what I trained for, but what the heck.
I have a couple of speculations.
First, once you awaken in the morning, you set off a series of internal triggers that cause a sequence of things to happen in your body. For example, the first thing you do when you wake up is you urinate. This decreases the volume of your bladder, which releases the pressure on a specific nerve, which triggers signals to your adrenal gland to start pumping so-called “stress” hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol. These hormone get your mind and body revved up to deal with your day. Your cortisol levels reach their peak in mid-morning, several hours after you wake up.
The point is, there are sequelae that take place in your body and they take time to unfold. For you, it apparently takes a certain amount of time for your bowels to prepare themselves to evacuate. If you get up earlier and therefore allow more time before you hit the road, you might find you can take care of business at home rather than on the road or when you arrive at work.
You also might be able to use some of your personal triggers to expedite the process. I would imagine you engage in a flury of activity before you leave your home, such as showering, getting dressed, packing up article to take with, making coffee, walking to the car, etc. If you can incorporate a bit more activity earlier, then you might induce evacuation earlier.
In a similar vein, for some people eating is a trigger for bowel movements. When you eat, your stomach stretches. The nerves signal your large intestine that your stomach is full and there is an immediate need to make room for the next load that is coming. This causes the muscles in your large bowels to contract, inducing the bowel movement. This action is referred to as the gastrocolic reflex.
So, if presently you do your morning hygene things and then get dressed and then eat shortly before leaving your house, you might want to switch up your schedule. Push eating to earlier in your morning schedule to allow your gastrocolic reflex to do its thing so you can take care of your business before you start to drive to work.
Everyone’s body clock runs differently. For example, some people defecate daily while others go every other day or even every two days. In addition, everyone eats different quantities of food.
If you wish to become more regular, increase your fiber intake and drink more water.
