  1. Although coffee is great for neutralizing other odors, it can be very fleeting to use it to freshen a space for more than a few days. However, if you insist, here are some thoughts:
Whole beans will release gases and oils more slowly, you could hang a mesh bag in front of an air vent in the car to push the aroma around the car or just leave it sitting in a cup holder.
I often carry my just-roasted beans and even in sealed canning jars and ziplock bags and the aroma diffuses in the interior. I hesitate to “waste” my fresh beans to freshen my car specifically, but it is a good side-effect of the hobby.
Ground coffee aroma is very fleeting, due to the increased exposure to the elements, which diffuse the gases and dry the exposed oils. Freshly ground coffee may be a quick-cover, but don’t expect it to last, think sprint vs. marathon.
Personally, I have taken to putting incense sticks in my vents to freshen the car. I find this lasts several days or more and you can mix and match aromas. You could certainly find coffee scented incense and see if that gives you the desired effect.

  2. As a professional coffee technician and roaster, my opinion would be to find a local roaster and purchase beans that were roasted and ground fresh that day if possible. Packaged in a valve type bag, the coffee will de-gas for the next several days, up to 2 weeks depending on temperature. Every so often the bag will put off some of the coffee gas, which you will smell as a burst of fragrance. After you stop noticing the scent blasts, you can open the bag, and leave it just sealed enough that the grounds don’t escape. After a month or so, throw the coffee out.

  3. Here is simple answer. Coffee beans will relase aroma more slowly means that it will last longer. Coffee grounds will relase more aroma in shorter periods of time.

  4. Coffee grounds have thousands of times more surface area than beans, so they will be much more effective but also not last as long. It also depends on how you put them in your car I guess. If they are in a container with only a small opening then there would be less difference. I wonder if there would be a market for coffee scented car deodorisers….. quick google, and there are already products out there 🙂

  5. So when you want a substance to react, you increase its surface area as much as possible. When you have coffee beans, you are maintaining the product as a whole, longer. So the beans will dry out slower and impart smell for longer, gradually releasing their oils into the air. However, if you believe the grounds absorb the smell, then the grounds would be better as there is more surface area to absorb the car odours.
