Near the University, I like the coffee at Time Market and Caffe Luce best. Cafe Passe on 4th Avenue is good too. Luce has a northern location too; I’ve never been there, though.
As an update: a few months ago, Exo Roast Co. opened up a coffeehouse at 6th Avenue and 7th Street. I think this is the outfit that supplies beans to Time Market. They will give you the full coffee-snob experience: no pre-brewed coffee, only made to order pour-over, French press, Chemex, and espresso, served by employees who use words like “cupping.”
I think the best coffee in Tucson is at Caffe Luce. They roast their own beans and do it well! I also like Bentley’s and Cafe Passé.
It depends on what you consider ‘good’ coffee. If third wave coffee is your thing, Exo Roast, Cartel, Savaya and Sparkroot are your only options. If you’re lucky, Cafe Aqui might be open, but they keep random hours ( *excellent* espresso).
Stepping only slightly away from third wave is Cafe Luce, Raging Sage, Cafe Passé, and Time Market.
I like all of the above for different reasons and I also like Starbucks, which are now ubiquitous in Tucson.
The best coffee I found in Tucson was on weekends when I went to Phoenix. It’s not that there isn’t good coffee, but it’s very hard to find places, even the standardized chains, that have consistently good coffee. Even the best rated chains and small coffee shops my brew varied from exceptional to nearly toxic with cleaner depending on how many times I went back. It was just safer and more reliable to get a Nespresso machine that made OK but reliable, safe coffee.
Spark Root downtown (on Congress West of Euclid) has awesome coffee, and a fantastic atmosphere. Cartel Coffee labs on Campbell is also one of my favorites. The baristas really know what they are doing.
Victor Allen’s
Savaya Coffee Market on Broadway near Craycroft is, by far, the best in Tucson…Enjoy!
Caffe Milano on Congress Street or Raging Sage on Campbell north of Grant Road.
There are a handful of options for good coffee in Tucson, and a lot places ranging from mediocre to terrible.
By the University of Arizona campus check out Cafe Luce on Park just north of University blvd. They roast their own beans daily and get a decent rotation of unique beans.
One of the best options in town is Savaya Coffee Market on Broadway & Craycroft. They roast all their own beans, have an excellent selection of single origin beans, and all of the staff are very knowledgeable and interested in coffee.
Some places to steer away from, if you care about the quality and taste of your coffee:
Coffee Exchange on Campbell. Lousy coffee, employees who don’t care, bad atmosphere. They are open 24 hours so on the very rare occasion when you are totally desperate it might be slightly better than circle k.
Shot in the Dark on Broadway downtown. Similar situation to Coffee Exchange. Rude employees, bad coffee. Last time I was there they didn’t even know what kind of coffee they had on drip.
