  1. A couple of spots on the Upper West Side, Manhattan:
Joe’s at Columbia – They have a beautiful, naturally-lit cafe on the Mezzanine level of the corner building at Broadway and 120th. Tends to get crowded, but worth the fight.

Aroma espresso bar – On 72nd between Amsterdam and Columbus. The coffee is so-so but they have a nice terrace, comfortable seating, decent food and are open till late.
Irving Farm Coffee Roasters, UWS – 79th between Broadway and Amsterdam.
Stumptown in the Village – W 8th, between 5th and 6th aves. They’ve got a fantastic brew bar where they do an open-to-all coffee cupping session at 2 pm everyday. Seating space is negligible, but Washington Square Park is a stone’s throw away.

  3. Perk Cafe at 38 and 3 – great coffee, great pastries and tucked away from noise. Great option especially in Midtown East/Murray Hill

  4. The coffee was okay but I really enjoyed the atmosphere sitting around at the Oval Cafe in Stuyvesant town.
The nice thing about Stuy town is that its peaceful, quiet and green, and only steps away from the East Village. Its also clean and you have plenty of elbow room, which is unusual for the neighborhood. There’s also families and kids so it feels like a change of pace from anything below 14th street.

There’s also outdoor seating, which I can’t find a picture of but it looks identical to this (there’s 4 symmetric buildings around the oval)

New Yorkers love to hate on Stuy Town but once you’re jaded enough, you’re going to take full advantage of this hidden spot the cool kids don’t care for.

  5. B Cup at 13th Street and Avenue B in the East Village (NYC neighborhood) . Cafe Pick-Me-Up at 9th and A is another good one that stays open pretty late.
