  1. As far as I know, they are both regional words for the same thing, a sandwich on a bread roll that’s longer than it is wide. What the French would call a batard. All over the US, there are similar sandwiches, known variously as subs (for submarine, based on the shape) hoagies, heros, grinders, po’ boys, and several other variations.
    When I went to college in Boston I was bemused by the signs advertising New York style subs, since growing up in New York, I had always called them heros. To make things even more confusing, they advertised NY style steak and cheese subs. Cheese steak subs are a Philadelphia specialty.
