  1. Rit dye – do the job outside – follow instructions on package – use very hot water with the dye – after the clothes have soaked and water is cooled cool off – rinse with warm (not hot water) – outside – and hang on line to dry – outside over an area of grass or dirt —-
agree with previous suggestion – better to buy them black – [cheapest at goodwill or salvation army].

  2. The best way to dye fabric black is to fill a large container with hot water and add black fabric dye . Use more dye for a darker black , or add a 1/4 cup of salt per 1/2 pound of fabric you’re dyeing to make the final color more vibrant.

  3. I have to profoundly disagree with the suggestion of using RIT. It is an “all-purpose” dye. It does not bond with the fibers. It merely stains them. Items that are dyed with RIT will bleed, continuously, every time they are washed. And, it will get on anything the item is washed with. Not to mention, a good black is the most difficult color to achieve, especially if you aren’t using quality dyes that are sufficient for your project.
I said all that to say, if you are dyeing natural fiber material, use procion fiber reactive dyes. That’s a long name that sounds intimidating, but don’t be turned off. The dyes are not terribly expensive, and are more than worth it.
The best black out there, in my dyeing opinion, is Dark Black from Custom Colours. Inc. .
Dyeing items a solid color would be the process of vat or tub dyeing. It is fairly easy. You can find instructions for that process and most any dyeing supplies you might need at Dharma Trading Co. Homepage .
