  1. As Anthony (Tony) Stompanado says, an espresso is a lot more than a machine. To his answer you also need to add a good grinder, which in itself can easily be another $500–$1000. The bare minimum for a good espresso is a Rancilio Silvia machine with a PID kit to improve the temperature and a grinder like a Rancilio Rocky or Baratza. You can have it all for less than $1,500. But then you need to find really good, Italian-style roasted fresh beans (ideally less than 2 weeks old by the time you finish using them): the quality and freshness of the beans are 50% of the flavor of an espresso. Even with the best espresso machine and grinder in the world, you could never ever get a good Italian style espresso from the awfully roasted Starbucks beans, for example. And most American espresso is roasted for lattes, not single shots, so the roast profile is different from what you drink in Italy, where the majority of espresso beans are for single espresso. And then you need to plan at least 6 months of daily shots to learn how to get the most out of the machine and the beans. Even 2F difference in water temperature completely change the flavor of a shot
Assuming you don’t want to spend that much money and time learning how to use an espresso machine, the next best alternative is a Nespresso machine with good Italian capsules. I lived as an expat in lot of countries and could not carry my “good” espresso machine+grinder everywhere, so instead I relied on a Nespresso + Vergnano coffee pods. It’s not a perfect espresso by any means, but it’s 90% of a good Italian espresso in a very convenient package and at an affordable cost. Even at home, with the espresso machine ready to be used, my wife still resorts to the Nespresso, because she doesn’t want to bother with the preheating time of the machine (at least 40 minutes), the exact dosing of the beans and the proper way to extract a shot. If I’m available, she’d rather have a proper shot. If I’m not, she goes for the Nespresso every time.
You can buy Vergnano capsule from Bed Bath and Beyond in the USA (or sometimes online), and there are various types to try and help you find the one you like the best. It won’t be exactly like the espresso you had in Italy, but I guarantee it’s better than 90% of the espresso you can get in an American coffeehouse
