  1. Rebecca’s, in South Park, is a delightful place, in an amazing building, run by a wonderful and welcoming woman.
And I don’t even like scones. Everybody talks about them, but I never even tried them.
There’s a great community there and she really does make everybody feel welcome.

  2. Caffé Calabria in North Park, and Zumbar in Sorrento Valley.
Edit 7 Febrary 2013: Coffee And Tea Collective, also in North Park, does excellent pour-over coffee.

  3. Revolution Roasters, Coffee and Tea Collective, Cafe Moto, Roast Coach, Dark Horse Coffee, CoffeeLab, Lofty Coffee Company, Pannikin. in addition to those already mentioned, all of these roast their own beans, and many of them offer pour over. there are also cool places that serve these roasters’ beans, but that list is very large.

  4. To be honest, I don’t go to many cafes. I lived a block away from Lestat’s on Park Boulevard in University Heights so I occasionally would stop in for a latte or cap. I tend to favor places with local color and there is a nice cross-section of clientele here. The people behind the counter are always friendly and make good coffee. Also, it is open 24 hours if you’re a night bird.
Another good neighborhood place is Kennsington Cafe in where else? The Kennsington neighborhood on Adams Avenue. They’ve been there a long time and still hung on after Starbuck’s opened across the street from them. I used to get an amaretto coffee there that was always really good. I recommend them as well but their hours are 6:00 Am to 9:00 pm Monday through Thursday and open til 10:00 Friday through Sunday.

  7. I would also recommend Claire de Lune in North Park, and Rebecca’s in South Park. The scones at Rebecca’s are the best in the city.

  8. Caffe Calabria in North Park roasts its own coffee and employs some of the best baristas in San Diego. They also have a wood-fired pizza oven and full bar. Their panini are outstanding. I would recommend it as a full-service cafe in the style of an Italian coffee bar.
Pannikin is also excellent. I’ve only been to their Leucadia location, but they serve high-quality coffee in a quaint A-frame building right on the Coast Highway.
Some reputable roasters are Cafe Moto, based in Barrio Logan, and Bird Rock coffee roasters, which has a store in Little Italy.
You can get high-quality coffee from several locations in Little Italy, but I agree with a poster above that Papalecco makes outstanding coffee drinks.

  9. Zumbar Coffee & Tea by the 5/805 merge is the best cup of coffee (in any form) as well as the best bag of beans I’ve had in San Diego. They roast on site, and I’ve never had a latte there that didn’t increase my happiness level at least 17%.

  10. My current favorite is a new place by the downtown library called Bean Bar. Excellent pour over, espresso, and tea. There are not many fancy drinks or much in the way of food, just really excellent simple coffees.
    Bean Bar
Caffe Calabria is pretty good for their Americanos and a decent breakfast blend to brew in my french press at home.
Lestat’s is my favorite hangout spot and has the best selection of teas and random snacks, including occasional vegan treats for our friends. They are always packed though.
