  1. If you’re talking just the glazed doughnut, I’d have to go with Krispy Kreme. When they come off the line so fresh and hot there is nothing better. However, for some reason, Krispy Kreme has just never gotten the rest of their doughnuts up to the same level of greatness.
For every other type of doughnut – filled, frosted, and cake — Dunkin Donuts is better. However, that said, I have been disappointed in recent years with Dunkin Donuts. When I worked at Dunkin Donuts every store made their own donuts fresh, in store, twice a day. They were fabulous! Now, the donuts are all made at a central facility and trucked to each store. By the time they get to some stores, hours have passed and the donuts are already going almost 5 to 6 hours old. Many store run out of donuts and they have no way of getting anymore because they can’t make any in house, they have to be trucked in and if they didn’t order or weren’t sent the right amount – you have a donut store without any donuts. I’m not sure who made the decision to take the making of the donuts in house out to a “central” location (where I live the “central” location is over 50 miles away – not so central if you ask me). I’m sure is was to save money but in the end you’re just making lower quality donuts that people like less. Right now I get, fresher, better donuts at my local Big Y then I can at Dunkin Donuts.
I still feel Dunkin Donuts reigns supreme over Krispy Kreme on every aspect except their glazed doughnut but I wish Dunkin Donuts cared more about their customers than the bottom line and provided fresher products today like they did when donuts were made in house.

  2. In my experience, donuts are the worst part of Dunkin’. They taste really underwhelming— similar to the donuts that my mother once tried (and failed) to make.
By contrast, Krispy Kreme donuts are fluffy, full of flavour, and leave a nice mouthfeel. I’d take Krispy Kreme donuts over Dunkin’ Donuts any day of the week.

  3. I think it really depends on where you are. In Asheville, Krispy Kreme is far superior to Dunkin, which isn’t saying a lot. Smart locals get their donuts at Geraldine’s. In every other city I have lived in, Dunkin was always better than Krispy Kreme. Again, not a high bar for quality.

  4. I don’t like donuts very much anymore because the sugar upsets my stomach, but when I was a kid, Dunkin Donuts had an angel cream filled donut that was Devine! I think angel cream is made with lard, so that kind of grosses me out, but other than that I thought they were delicious.

  5. Krispy Kreme, without a doubt! There is no contest! The FRESSHLY made glazed are to die for. The donuts of Dunkin’ are sitting on the shelf forever

  6. This is a little like asking if one prefers steak over lobster. It depends on how I am feeling at that particular moment.
In my opinion, DD has the best “cake” donuts, but KK has the best honey glazed.

Krispy Kreme sucks. Their donuts are all the same size, the same consistency, and they all taste the same. And they’re little wimpy things smaller than your hand. I’m not a fan of the one-note 95% sugar icing thing they have going on. It’s like if you took all the whitebread sitcoms of the 80s like “Full House” and somehow extracted all the simple carbs from it, you’d get Krispy Kreme: safe, boring, and sickeningly sweet.
Dunkin’ Donuts, on the other hand, is the Shangri-La of the donut dimension. You have variety. There are cake donuts. Non-cake donuts. Maple bars. Big ol’ raspberry-jam-filled lumps of fried dough. Apple fritters the size of a baseball catcher’s mitt. A tantalizing array of different frostings and sprinkles. Fart.

  9. It depends on where you live. I used to live in Florida, and seeing the sign “fresh donuts” was always guaranteed to get my car turning without any say-so from me.
I now live in Massachusetts, where the nearest Krispy Kreme is in Connecticut. That being so, and me not driving means I am stuck with Dunkin.
I have not had a donut in years. But a few hours difference in the “fresh donut” sign makes a world of difference in even KK. It is the freshness of the of KK donut, with the dough still hot from the fryer and the icing there but invisible because it was soaking into the donut that makes KK irresistible.
If you have never had a fresh KK donut you might as well eat a Dunkin.

  10. Both are terrible, one has a variety, one makes only one kind….Most DD are made somewhere else and brought to the store(can be a few days old)…..My choice DD’s

  11. I don’t eat donuts anymore, so I shouldn’t be answering. But between those 2, I prefer Krispy Kreme. I think Shipley’s are better than either of the ones the OP listed.

  12. I prefer KK donuts because the bread is soooo light. The glazed donut alone is so delicious, especially fresh out of the oven. I find DD donuts too bready for my taste.

  13. KK made a push into New England and failed. They did not fail because of their donuts, even though studies have shown that people prefer DD donuts. They failed because of their coffee. Few people go to DD or Starbucks for their food offerings. They go for the coffee (caffeine). When there, they grab a bite to eat. The food offerings are a big part of the business, but if DD and SB stopped selling coffee, their food business would perish. KK sold donuts (the best, IMO), but their coffee was so shitty I never ordered another. I would make two stops rather than drink the bitter swill they tried to pass off as not-nuclear-waste.

  14. AS far as I am concerned ….NEITHER.
It’s the extra expensive donuts or the extra sugary ones?
I am not a donut person but if I must have one in an emergency, I’ll have a plain sugar donut with a Dunkin’s Donut coffee.
    If I must…..

  15. I actually prefer Tim Horton’s to both of them! Maple syrup donuts mmm
I happen live next to lots of Dunkins Donuts; and no Krispy Kreme in the immediate vicinity. So when I travel and see KK, I get their donut, just because it’s a little exotic. But other than the exotic factor, DD is better, less sugary.

  16. It’s hard to compare cake doughnuts with yeast rings, but I have to choose Krispy Kreme. The glaze is an absolute mess and I feel sick when I eat more than one, but call it Stockholm Syndrome. I’m addicted.

  17. I can’t do either of them any more and they never did sit well with me and my celiacs disorder. But before I was diagnosed I did consume way to many of both and I developed a definite fondness of Dunkins over Krispys. I didn’t like the heavy fats in the KKs and found them to be heavy and coating in my mouth.
Thanks for the A2A Peter Charette

  18. The brand that is better is the one you want to eat. Eat the donut that tastes the best to you. If you’re concerned about ingredients, or calories, then choose the one that conforms to your needs. Otherwise, listen to your mouth!

Instead of those, I usually eat these.
