  1. I would think that the main obstacle will appear when some people realize that energy transfer occurs by means of an electromagnetic energy field.

  2. Different electronic devices may have different obstacles depending on their size, capacity, real-estate available for the integration of the receiver and so forth. The traditional wireless charging solutions (based on induction) have several challenges. One of the main obstacles is that the coil cannot be integrated into small electronic devices or devices that have curvature rather than a flat surface. Also, precise placement is an issue with induction, meaning that in order for power to transfer efficiently the coils must be aligned.
There are different wireless solutions, however that can overcome these obstacles through a different wireless charging technology. Such as the RF-based solution provided by Humavox. Other solutions are being developed as well but many are still not at a mature stage to conclude their capability.
It is very much possible that different electronic devices will have a different wireless charging technology based on their characteristics and the drawbacks I described above. For example, flat and bigger electronic devices will be powered by induction, while smaller and curved devices by an RF-based solution.

  3. Size of the receiver – small devices are challenging to pickup enough signal.
Efficiency – no wireless system will ever be as efficient as wired
Charger Ecosystem – the USB port is hard to beat for ubiquity
