Personally, I would suggest Good Morning Call. Although I’m biased since I read and loved the manga as a middle schooler haha

my top 5 ranking, feel free to add your own comments:
5. you’re my pet – kimi wa petto
plot: after a huge chain of bad events a woman, sumire, comes home to find a homeless young man outside her house. the young man, takeshi, strongly resembles sumire’s former pet dog, and so she takes takeshi in and takes care of him as her pet.
review: honestly i love this drama so much. it’s a bit of an emotional rollercoaster but their interactions are everything. the plot is so well-written, i’d watch it again if i had the time to. bonus: the leads are really hot and the drama is actually really funny. 17/20

4. jellyfish princess
plot: 20-year-old tsukimi is a jellyfish otaku, meaning that she is completely and utterly obsessed with them. she lives in an apartment with other otaku-type women. one day, she meets a mysterious man named kuranosuke by chance. she soon meets kuranosuke’s brother, shu, and her life completely changes because of these two.
review: this drama is so, so funny, it had me crying-laughing. i cannot emphasise enough how hilarious this was, all the characters, their acting was amazing. and who can forget the crazy housemates she lives with? i love this drama tbh. 17/20

3. an incurable case of love
plot: sakura is a rookie nurse after studying hard for 5 years. the reason why she became a nurse was because she met doctor tendo by chance and fell in love with him, determined to reunite with him. however, upon starting work at his hospital, she finds out that he is completely the opposite of the kind-hearted, loving man she thought he was.
review: this drama is also really funny, and while i know a lot of people don’t care about this, i liked how educating it was, like i got to know what goes on inside hospitals and stuff- anyway, their chemistry was amazing from start to end, even the tension and strain at the start. 18.5/20

2. meet me after school
plot: hijiri begins work as a teacher in a remote village while maintaining a long-distance relationship with her fiancé, who works for a big company. suddenly, hijiri becomes attracted to one of her students and must make a choice that will change her life.
review: this drama had me crying so much. the plot is SO well-written, the OSTs are amazing, and the emotional strain the leads had to go through was portrayed in so much detail. 19/20

a story to read when you first fall in love
plot: a romance-dense harumi used to be a model student in her high school days, but after being rejected from the prestigious tokyo university, her life has gone nowhere but downhill since then. three men of completely different personalities appear suddenly in her life, all of them falling in love with her. yuri, a rebellious high-schooler, who starts studying at the cram school that harumi teaches. yamashita, a man she once tutored in high school and yuri’s teacher. masashi, her best friend, who got into tokyo university.
review: my all-time favourite drama. it has everything, emotional moments, humour, romance, chemistry, and of course, the funny best friend. i love it so so so much, i always recommend this drama first thing to anyone who wants to get into japanese dramas. 100/10

Recommend the app to watch Japanese dramas for free:
I have watched more Kdramas than Japanese, but here are the ones that I personally loved so far:
ディア・シスター (Dear Sister) has a bit of romance on the side, but it is really about the relationship between an elder and younger sister with extremely different personalities and the attempts to resolve past issues.
たったひとつの恋 (Love of My Life) lags in places, and is one of those ones where I yelled at the tele in frustration (I am an interactive viewer), yet once again, I thought this a refreshing break from some terrible Kdramas I had watched in a row (there are a great many Kdramas, I just ran into some lame ones). Poor girl meets rich man is a plot that happens in a large percentage of Korean dramas, but what about the reverse? This may not be all that controversial in the Western world, but this drama examines the difficulties in one’s own pride, views of society, etc. when a poor man and rich woman are involved. Bonus: 綾瀬はるか (Haruka Ayase) is in this! She is amazing to watch in pretty much everything she has been in.
僕のいた時間 (The Hours of My Life) is a tear-jerker. I HATE tear-jerkers, but this one was extremely refreshing. I can’t really describe it without spoilers, so here is where I will leave it. Haruma Miura is as wonderful as ever. A little melodramatic, but life-altering and hopeful despite- ok, enough. Just watch this one already. 😉
花より男子 (Hana Yori Dango) – I think everyone has watched this. 😀 It is over the top, but addictive. This was the first drama I ever watched. The score (OST) is moving and memorable, the story has some terrible typical ploys, but it is one of those that you can’t turn off until it is finished. I hope you are ready to loose precious sleep….
On My To-Watch List:
Liar Game- it looks amazing!!! I keep waiting until I have time, but in between school and work I never seem to get time. 😛
1 Liter of Tears- I am constantly recommended this. But, as I mentioned before, I am not particularly interested in having my heart twisted and wrenched like a discarded rag, and I think I have shed enough tears on school alone. I don’t know when I will ever get around to watching this…
For films:
ヒロイン失格 (Heroine Disqualified) – This film was so much fun! At least, the first part of it was… I felt the same about “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”: I loved the first half, but the second not so much. That is because it is heavier on the comedy in the first half. This film is wayyyy over the top, but that is what makes it so much fun to watch. It is anime in action mixed with some minor effects that were akin to “Scott Pilgrim.”
Just a little side-note, these are my favourite K-dramas:
“Healer” – Action (!!!) and a plot that doesn’t hinge upon love triangles and “Who will they be with?” My favourite Kdrama ever.
“Signal” – The drama that makes all other dramas look like meaningless fluff. Akin to a suspenseful mystery novel. The ending though…..
So, just a heads-up… I tend to prefer suspense, action, and bro-mance films over romance. 🙂

I highly recommend the following! Will add more when I think of more.
Juunen Saki mo Kimi ni Koishite -Short drama with some comedy. The drama is very underrated in my opinion. I love it so much, I’ve watch the entire series a few times!
Nagareboshi – Romance drama with a sadder tone to it but not the Kdrama end-of-the-world tearjerker kind of sad. I did shed some tears though.
