  1. The night before the doctor will give you a white liquid laxative to drink. It cleans everything out prior to the procedure in order to clear your digestive tract. You will usually drink it in split intervals.

  2. There is only thing you can have 8–12 hours before a colonoscopy. First you must complete the prep medicine to clean you out. And the word is COMPLETE the prep. Then the only thing is WATER. No tea, no coffee, no lemonade. Only water. Now after you are done with the colonoscopy you can eat. If they find ANYTHING INSIDE YOU THEN ASK THEM Before YOU LEAVE IF THERE IS ANYTHING YOU SHOULD NOT HAVE. I had this done on me about 2 months ago. That is why I know. I think after I would keep the spicy food away for a few days for the body to adjust. On mine it came out clear and they did not find anything wrong so they did not say anything about not to have. I was put under for it for a short time so there is no pain at all. Also you CANNOT DRIVE AFTERWARDS FOR THE REST OF THE DAY. You need someone to take you home after. Or they will not release you. The reason you cannot drive is you will be very light headed and not mentally all with it to drive. So don’t even try! Now before the 12 hour time it has to be clears only like jello, broth,Gatorade. NOTHING THAT IS RED IN COLOR. This the day before. I know it will not be fun spending all day very near the bathroom. But if you don’t do it right, you will have to do it all over again. That would be hard to bare again. Then you get to do it all again in 10 years.

  3. Other than what the doctor gives you (laxative formula) or sends you to get at your pharmacy (laxative)….no. You want to make sure to follow your instructions and stay home that day. You’ll be familiar with all the cracks and paint chips in your bathroom by the next morning! Drink plenty of water or light colored Gatorade to keep you hydrated!!!

  4. The latest seems to be some combination of Miralax and Gatorade followed by Magnesium Citrate a few hours before the procedure. Sometimes dulcolax is added in the beginning to start the prep off with a bang. Its torture but its necessary. In the past they used a solution called Go-Lytely (I forget the generic name but its purpose was the same as Miralax) I always said whoever named that should have been hung. It often led to dehydration. Miralax seems to be less of a risk of that.

  5. Anything you can see thru that isn’t red, orange or purple. That includes black coffee and tea. Colored liquids often have dyes that may obscure the area or mislead the colonoscopist. Pulpy juices are not allowed. Your provider should give you a list of what you can and cannot have. Seven-up is good and cuts the salty taste of the solution.
