I would definitely recommend Santa Clara City Library. It is huge and well-lit. You are among books and everyone is either reading or doing something related to books, so this atmosphere would definitely make you want to read. Atleast that’s the case with me. Also there is free wifi and computers available in case you want it for some quick research. There is a Central Park adjacent to the library, if you are looking for a more open space to read.
Library is open till 9 PM on most weekdays. It closes early on weekends so timing may not be very convenient for you.
2 cents: Among the better places I’ve heard are Red Rock Coffee (open until 11pm on Sat and 8pm on Sun) on Castro St, Mountain View and Philz Coffee (San Jose, Sunnyvale, Palo Alto – check timings, but I am mostly sure they aren’t open as late as Red Rock). Great places to work – one of my doctoral thesis chapters was in fact partly written on some of Philz’ finest coffee and free wifi 🙂
Two awesome spots in Sunnyvale:
Philz on S Frances Street
Why? Great natural light and amazing staff.
Bambu on W Washington Avenue
Why? Great study room tucked into the back.
Santa Clara North Side Library is one of my favorite spots to read. But the timings are not too convenient.
I would say anywhere in Rivermark plaza is good to read. Not very noisy not very silent. I feel it’s just right atmosphere to read .
