  1. It is at discretion. I will say for a reguar coffee perhaps not but if you are getting a more involved drink, frappuccino, 2 pumps this 2 pumps that, I throw them something. If I am ordering multiple drinks I always leave a few bucks at least. This is just how I do things, again all at your discretion.

  2. “Should” implies some sort of moral or social obligation. In the US, where sit-down restaurant servers are paid less than minimum wage, there is a universal social expectation of tipping at least 15%. It’s a broken system where business owners are legally allowed to pass on their payroll obligations to their customers, but since that is the way it is, but if we did away with tipping and servers were paid a fair market wage, restaurants would have to raise prices to stay in business, so I do feel a social obligation to tip there (though I’d rather they just raise prices and take away the tipping expectation). In a coffee shop? Not so much. Why? Baristas are paid at least minimum wage, most make more. For instance, in my state, where the legal minimum wage is $7.25, the average barista makes $9.48.
Now, consider that you can buy a cup of coffee at McDonalds for $1, that cost the McDonalds peopl…

  3. In general, any coffeehouse that has a tip jar out (or the option to tip on a computer screen) pays their baristas a wage that is on the low side (usually minimum wage). The owner expects staff to supplement their paycheck with tip money.
Regardless of what you order, please tip . And believe me: we remember the kind customers who tip- and the jerks who don’t.

  4. What?
Yes. Every time. This is basic etiquette. Even if it’s just the change from a broken bill. But for espresso drinks, usually the custom is $1+, assuming you want your drink made with care. Not that baristas will likely sabotage your drink if you don’t tip, but count on extra care and attention put into your order once you are established as someone who tips.
Anyway, you’d tip a bartender, right? Baristas are providing much the same service. Skilled beverage preparation should result in tips.

  5. That depends. If he/she did nothing more than a robot, which is really all they’re actually required, then no. If, on the other hand, the barista engaged in light conversation that was tailored to your interest, answered questions or made recommendations that would make your experience special, or anything else to make your visit more than simply picking up a cup of joe, then it might be appropriate. It’s entirely up to you.

  6. Yes especially if you are pleased with their service.
Especially if you are planning to return. They will probably continue to give you good service. More so if you are a scrooge. You can ask how they are too, take an interest in their work etc.
It’s nice to shout them thanks as you leave the shop too.

  7. The standard is to tip when a person does a service for you. That includes making food or beverage, valet service, carrying something for you, etc. In general, a cafe or coffee shop is a service based job and it is typical and often expected to tip.
However, any place of business that is corporate owned or part of a large company is treated differently and has different rules.
Large company cafes (Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, etc) are the kind that have in house rules about tipping and tips are distributed. I worked at Starbucks, and their rules are that a customer cannot tip a specific person, but community tip jars are allowed and tips are evenly distributed based on the number of hours worked for that day or week (usually week).
Tipping in the US is already a shaky thing that very few understand. Americans are notoriously bad tippers, and most only believe in tipping when exceptionally good service has been experienced. This may or may not be a good thing, but it’s personal choice.
I always tip when I know that the tip is going to go to a certain person who did a service for me. When I know it’s going into the communal jar, I judge my tip differently, knowing that it’s not about what one person did, but about how all of them did (and also knowing each of them will only get about 40 cents of that tip anyway) or if I like the place and frequent it often.

  8. Yes, you should. I don’t really even like coffee but my daughter goes thru those drive up coffee shops constantly and she always tips. If I’m driving then I do too. If they go out of their way to make something especially the way you like it, tip them even more!
