  1. Well, I won’t go into all the detail Mr. Jones did, but I will tell you he is half right about the dry county thing. It used to be a dry county(with the exception of being a “member” where you could drink at the restaurants and bars only), but that has changed… some. You can now buy beer at most grocery stores now, thanks to all those Baptists who voted, lol, but you still have to drive outside the county line to buy the hard stuff.
Tyler is like many places. It’s what you make of it. If you like the outdoors, lakes, etc, then there’s a lot to do. If you like traffic and terrible drivers, you’ll love Tyler. Healthcare is why I call our best kept secret, however, probably not that much of a secret anymore, and becoming a pretty big retirement community for that reason. Lots of oil and ranch money in a few select hands. Cost of living far exceeds what the average income is. But if your profession is one of the above, you’ll likely to fine.

  2. I got out of the army the last time in Jan 1978 and moved to hideaway lake. It’s close to lindale a few miles south of Tyler. I worked for the sheriff’s from 78 to 81, Tyler being the county seat. Pretty east Texas pine trees. Everywhere. There is the Tyler state park for camping and fishing. There are numerous good fishing lakes around east Texas. If you hunt, there are avid hunters around. If you need a doctor it always felt like Tyler is the doctor capital of Texas. Excellent health care there. I’m supposing that Smith county is probably is a dry county. Plenty of clubs to drink at. Have to drive 20 miles or more to bordering counties to buy beer and liquor. Lots of bible thumpers and baptist Jesus freaks. You could run into them at the liquor stores though. Lots of times neighbors would call each other and advising each other that you were going to the liquor store. That way everybody didn’t have to make a beer run. Helped each other out. Weren’t hardly any Mexicans around back then. Black people lived generally in their own community areas. One area is north of the loop. The other one I remember is south west Tyler called the st Louis addition. Arrested a bootlegger there once. North Tyler where I mentioned they had a bunch of oof shithole bard. If you walked in for a walk thru in uniform you could hear metal hitting the floor. Guns, knives. Tyler is noted for its roses. If you have bad allergies you don’t want to live in East Texas. It’s not the roses. It’s the damned old pine tree at time. You get yellow pollen all over your car. It can go without raining for a few days and when it does rain there is yellow water running everywhere because of the pines. I spent 20 yrs in East Texas. Tyler and Longview areas. Used to be a pretty nice town. Don’t know about now. I moved back to ft worth in 95. Well, Hurst if you know where that’s at. I was raised here. If I can give you more specific question I’m happy to respond.
