  1. A tea cup is typically six ounces or 180ml, and a mug is typically 8 oz or greater (~>240 ml). 180ml is the standard amount for one “tea bag”. If you are brewing less than 1g of tea per 100ml of water, you are “doing it wrong”.
A “standard” cup is eight ounces. Hence the confusion between cups, and tea cups.

  3. Generally speaking, a
    mug
is a type of cup that is sturdier and comes without a saucer while cup and saucer are visualized as a pair. A mug can be with or without a handle on its side though mugs with two handles are also available in the market. A mug is usually bigger in size than a cup and mostly has a cylindrical shape.

    Cup
is a generic term to indicate objects designed to hold fluids and used for drinking. It is the most common of drink ware found in all parts of the world. It is mostly made of
    ceramic
though it is also available in metallic and even in
    glass
. Cup is defined as a vessel that is opaque and used for drinking purposes. Though there may be cups of many different shapes and sizes in the markets, the image that strikes one when he hears the word cup is that of a short, cylindrical vessel with a handle on one side. In fact, the shape is conical with the base being smaller than the mouth of the cup.

  5. Think of a cup as a glass. and a mug is an insulated glass or ceramic vessel which is designed to keep a cold bed cold or a hot one hot. A glass is just something you drink out of.

Cup. 10 fl oz or 5 oz dry In America, a cup
is 8 US fluid ounces, a tablespoon is 1 /2 US fluid ounce.
Cup size in ladies bras would be different to their mug size.
A cup is half the size of a mug so measures a pint mug.
The difference is size, shapely contours and a small bottom.

  9. If you visit Vienna, Austria or Naples, Italy, you will not see a mug anywhere. Coffee and tea are served in cups with a saucer. That is the traditional, civilized way of having your hot beverage since many hundred years ago. In these cities you may also visit museums which hold on display cups, saucers and many type of old china.

  12. I think that Sandra Huibers is correct. A mug is a particular type of cup.
Wikipedia describes a Cup – Wikipedia as:
A cup is an open-top container used to hold liquids for pouring or drinking ; while mainly used for drinking, it also can be used to store solids for pouring (e.g., sugar, flour, grains). [1] [2]
According to Mug – Wikipedia :
A mug is a type of cup typically used for drinking hot drinks, such as coffee , hot chocolate , or tea . Mugs usually have handles [1] and hold a larger amount of fluid than other types of cup .
They also mention that mugs are usually more informal than something like a tea cup. Thus I would probably use a mug at home for coffee, but I might use tea cups with saucers if serving hot beverages in a more formal setting.

  13. Interesting you should ask (me).
For me, a mug is a cup you can get your fingers through (except perhaps the little finger) and hold onto better than you would a cup (with a smaller handle).
The trick though is to get a mug made of bone china so it is light enough to hold with full contents. The handle should also be designed in such a way that the vessel remains upright, balanced, and sh…

  14. The main difference between a cup and a mug is its capacity. Cups are mostly used for tea and mugs are mostly used for coffee, shakes, and water. A mug is available with or without a handle. even mugs are available with two handles. But Cups are only available with handle.

A mug is always a drinking vessel. A cup isn’t always a drinking vessel.
A mug has a handle large enough for all fingers of one hand to grasp. It is grasped from the side.
A cup is not very tall compared to its width. A mug is often tall but need not be.
A cup usually has a handle, but a small one. It may not have a handle.

  16. A cup was originally for coffee or tea or cocoa. It’s about 6 fluid ounces. It comes with a saucer. It’s meant for using at a table, like during a meal or something like that.
A mug was originally for beer. It’s bigger than a cup, sometimes much bigger, up to 16 oz (a pint, the standard portion for beer in much of the world). It’s used in less formal setting, like when you’re sitting at your desk, or watching TV.
Mugs are more popular today because nobody drinks 6 oz. of coffee. Even at Starbucks, the smallest size is 8 oz, and that’s not even on the menu, you have to know it exists to ask for it. (It’s called a ‘short’.) Also people drink coffee in many situations—at their desk at work, in a car, etc.
Mugs are also heavier, that is, the walls are thicker. This makes them less delicate, but also it holds heat better, because it takes longer to drink 10 or 12 oz. of coffee.

  17. A cup is smaller than a mug. A cup holds 4–6 fluid oz; a mug holds 8.
A cup tends to narrow towards the bottom while a mug is generally cylindrical.
A cup has a saucer but a mug usually doesn’t.
There are exceptions to everything I’ve said, but this is generally true.

  18. A cup holds 6 fluid ounces of liquid and I would use it for drinking tea. A mug is taller and holds 10 fluid ounces of liquid and I prefer it for drinking coffee. A Cup is also a standard measurement of liquids used in cooking recipes, or other things.

  19. I am not good in English, I did some research, this is what I found.
A cup, as I know is a small or medium container with a saucer used generally for coffee.
The word “mug” has several meanings in the English language (I speak about English people )
1 / A pot that can hold up to 1/2 liter of juice (being Muslim, I would not say beer).
2 / slush / mud speaking of clay.
3 / Someone mugged Sarah on the way home from work. (in the sens of to be aggressed).
4 / in the sense pejorative (mouth)
    5 / informal (stupid person)
