  1. Is the coffee bean a fruit, why?

The coffee cherry pictured here is ripe and ready for harvest after turning from green to red. The Coffee beans inside are actually seeds. The fruit surrounding the beans is usually discarded but is sometimes used to make a herbal tea called cascara tea. Duri…

  2. It is not a bean – it is a seed. But it is a fruit due to growing pattern..the coffee fruit, containing the seed, grows directly from a flower. This is why tomatoes are fruits and not vegetables – the growth pattern.

  3. Yes, because it’s actually the SEED of the coffee cherry.
    It’s a SEED. And a seed is a fruit.
Or, more exactly, the seed is inside the flesh of the fruit, which would make the cherry the fruit, and the bean the seed.
I recently read a book called “The Monk of Mokha”, where the lead character (this was a true story) went back to his grandfather in Yemen, to try to bring Yemeni coffee back up to the status it once held as the king of coffees. His grandfather had a coffee bush/tree in the courtyard, and they used to eat the fruit, and toss the seeds, like any cherry. He said the cherries were very tasty. I recommend the book highly. Especially if you like coffee.

  4. The coffee bean is the seed of a berry. (Indians are correct in saying “coffee seeds” instead of “coffee beans.”) Each berry normally has two seeds. The flat part of the coffee “bean” is where it fit with the other seed in the berry. A few of the berries have only one seed, and these seeds do not have the flat side … you may see these round seeds separated out and sold as “peaberry” coffee beans.

  5. It actually is considered a fruit. Why that is, I have no idea. I think they also consider an avocado or some vegetable a fruit.

  6. Yes
coffee beans are the seed of the fruit.
the flesh is often used to make a drink. they started selling them at Wall Mart a while back. not sure if they still do, but its very healthy and tastes great. a bit expensive though.

  7. First off so called coffee beans are not beans but seeds of the coffee berry. The fruit surrounding the coffee bean / seed is usually called coffee cherry and is edible. However this fruit is discarded as waste during processing but things are changing as some companies are looking to exploit this fruit. The odd thing, in Europe, this fruit is regarded as a ‘novel food’ and cannot be used in foods unless passed as ‘safe’ by the EFSA which controls food regulations. Which is a pity as it is a good way to use a normally waste food.
Your question: coffee beans are the seeds of the coffee berry or cherry.
