It depends on what you mean by ‘coffee maker coffee’, because there are different machines that make coffee in different ways. The most common meaning in the English-speaking world would be a machine that makes drip filter coffee. My understanding is that pour-over coffee is the same basic method, i.e. the coffee grounds sit in a conical paper filter, hot water is poured on top and it drips through. The main difference is that with pour-over, somebody manually pours hot water over the grounds, rather than letting a machine do it. (There’s also the question of how and when the coffee is ground, since many coffee machines include a grinder, but this is not an intrinsic difference between machine versus manual pour.)
If you’re comparing pour-over to a cheap coffee maker, then yes, there are advantages with the proper pouring technique. Specifically, you can get the coffee to ‘bloom’ (the grounds absorb some water, which forces some of the oils out) before the extraction begins in earnest, make sure the grounds are evenly covered, and avoid using excessive amounts of water overall. By contrast, a cheap coffee maker just pours hot water into the centre until the whole cone is flooded, which leads to uneven extraction, less oil and over-extraction of the very soluble bitter compounds.
Nowadays though, there are fancier coffee makers (sometimes called ‘automatic pour-overs’) with more sophisticated pouring mechanisms. At the other end, if you do a bad job of manual pouring, the result will be no better than with a cheap coffee maker. So it really comes down to a) the sophistication of the machine versus b) the skill of the person doing the manual pouring. A trained barista will do a better job of pouring than all but the most sophisticated machines, but somebody who just woke up and is groggily thinking of how quickly they can get their caffeine fix, maybe not so much.
Yes. Unequivocally, absolutely, without a doubt, unquestionably, unarguably, beyond measure, no question, there is no question about it, definitely, and totally
How long between grinding and water? It’s supposed to be 30 seconds. I think this is one of the most important steps. How good is that coffee? The process can only make good coffee beans turn into good coffee. Go out and try both. Fill your map of coffee with experience. Know the difference.
Sure it is. Don’t get all ready to be amazed though. It’s great and all but if you aren’t the type who can tell don’t bother.
You would never know until you tried both ways. Then you will have a taste from both ways. Then you will have your answer you are asking.
