  1. According to The Guardian, no it’s not.

Nevertheless, since I lack the money to indulge in these expensive temptations and the most expensive coffee I ever had might be at a Starbucks, I have to judge it from other’s view point; which in my case is “The Bucket List”. Yes, Kopi Luwak is one of the most expensive coffee, but is also made out of shit.
In hindsight, I think the movie glorified Kopi Luwak for the purpose of a justifiable joke.

  2. Maybe it is not in the top spot, but it still is unreasonably expensive. Just too much hype around it. Even Jack Nicholson appeared in a 2010 video, quite funny, though.
Not so funny is the exploitation of the poor civets which are caught and force-fed the coffee cherries. You can find more details on this site .

  3. No. Luwak coffee commands a high price due to simple supply and demand. Supply is limited because of its “unique” production method, and demand is high due to the mystique that has inexplicably risen around it, largely because it was prominently featured in the movie The Bucket List. This has become self perpetuating: its was expensive because of hype, and now it is hyped because it is expensive.
Coffee industry professionals have nearly unanimously rated it as extremely poor quality. And if the simple fact that it doesn’t taste good isn’t enough to dissuade you, allegations of animal abuse against luwak coffee producers are quite common. The animals are kept in poor conditions, and force fed coffee cherries.

If you want to spend top dollar on a unique coffee experience, seek out a shop serving Gesha coffee. Although Gesha is also overpriced due to hype, at least the hype started because of taste. And since more and more farms are now producing it it is becoming (relatively) affordable.

  4. Yes, you are right.
One of the most expensive and sought-after coffees in the world is called “Kopi luwak” or “Civet Coffee. ☕️
Civet coffee is a type of coffee that’s made from coffee beans which are excreted whole in the droppings (excrement/poop) of the Asian palm civet.

The type of coffee depends on the variety of beans the civet eats. It may feed on beans from the arabica coffee plant, the robusta, or any other coffee plant available to it.
The droppings are collected and the coffee beans are washed, roasted, ground, and then brewed to produce what has become the world’s most expensive coffee.

If you’re buying it by the pound it can cost between $100-$500 US. For a cup of civet coffee in a cafe, you could pay around $35-$80 US.
