  1. According to my medical school professor -Dr. J. Teuchmann – it is just opposite. Brain blood vessels are more open after drinking liquids with caffeine contents. And we are more alert after coffee, what support the above. However coronary blood vessels are at that time a little narrowed, so your heart rate is faster, compensating that. It is possible that it was typo – instead “decreasing” it should probably be“INCREASING” …..(blood flaw to the brain)

  2. Caffeine is a stimulant that may increase the heart rate but it’s unlikely to increase your rested heart rate from 60 to 85 to produce a 42% increase. However recent testing of caffeine users in significant numbers show that caffeine users live longer. This is logical since body functions slow with aging and can be stimulated to better function when vitamins B C D A E are used to support repair of body cells

  3. Czarek, I do not believe this to be true. It does constrict blood vessels which it is sometimes helpful for a headache, 42% is a bit much.

  4. Doubtful in the extreme. That much of a deficit in blood supply to the brain would lead to syncope, a/k/a “fainting”… and I don’t see a lot of folks falling to the floor in a dead faint at Starbucks.
    Just another nanny-fascist lie.

  5. That is nonsense.
The effects on blood flow are indisputable but the amount of decrease is estimated to be in the neighborhood of 20–30%.

  6. The number itself may or may not be entirely accurate, as everyone is different. However, caffeine usage DOES restrict blood flow to the brain. The increase in alertness is from stimulation of the neurons.
A cup a day or so may not be much problem. However heavy long term use could show long term problems as studies showed reduced gray matter over time. Also, the continued caffeine stimulation also stimulates the adrenal system exciting the fight or flight instincts.

  7. I don’t think any formulation of coffee has 250mg of caffeine. At that dosage, it may decrease blood flow up to 30%. Where did you get this idea? Espresso only has 64mg. If you have a double Turkish coffee and believe me, that is like tasty mud, it is only 100mg.
