As with all medical questions you need to consult your doctor before changing your diet with regards to any specific medical conditions. As your doctor will know your specific conditions and what is best for you.
Diabetes is an issue with how your body processes or metabolizes carbohydrate. If you’re type one then your body doesn’t produce insuline, the hormone that triggers the cells to metabolize carbohydrate. If you are drinking black coffee only then you would just need to make sure that caffeine won’t have an adverse affect. But being there is no sugar or carbohydrate in black coffee I would think you would be ok.
However, anything that is milk based, lattes, capps etc have sugar ie carbohydrate. Even if you do not add sugar, milk has a natural sugar lactose, that will affect your blood sugar levels. Black coffee is your best bet but I would double check with your Doctor on the potential side affects of caffeine.
Is coffee safe if I have diabetes? Although the evidence on coffee benefits is mixed, as long as you keep an eye on your blood sugar and stick to coffee with less sugar, drinking coffee should be safe. You can still drink alcohol with type 1 diabetes, but drinking too much may cause you to have a hypo, possibly as much as 24 hours later. Talk to your diabetes team about how to drink alcohol safely.
TID 50 years: please note the following is not to be taken as medical care or advice.
I drink up to 3 cups of coffee per day, allowing about 20 grams of carbohydrate per cup.
This amount I find allows for the milk in the coffee and the effect of caffeine on release of some glycogen from my liver. At least that is the way I justify to myself the indulgence !!
After about 46 years of doing so I do not think I have suffered any ill-effects ( certainly none that my doctors, relatives and friends have been kind enough to mention anyway) !!
There is no proven extra health benefit from drinking coffee for diabetics, but as long as you do not use sugar or cream, or adjust your insulin dosage when you use them, there are no negative effects either.
