It’s a bad idea if you plan to clean the tank by siphoning (“vacuuming”) because a siphon requires you to suck out water from a higher level (the tank) into a lower level (a bucket). So the tank has to be higher up. Without gravity to assist you, it just won’t work, and that’s just physics.
But I will say I was in a bar in New York that had fish under a glass countertop across the bar. Poor fish, they probably jumped every time someone set down their drink.
It’s not necessarily a bad idea, but my main question would be: “why?”
A tank under a table would be difficult to see, as even if you could look down into it from above, fish tend to be laterally compressed and difficult to see from above.
It would also be hard to access for maintenance. You would need to have cords running to and from the table to run the lights, heater, and filter, and you’d also have to lift off the entire top of the table whenever you had to do a water change or feed your fish.
It would also just look tacky. Why have something that wouldn’t look out of place in a Vegas casino when you could have it tastefully mounted on a good looking aquarium stand?
So basically, don’t get a table tank. They’re not functional or aesthetically pleasing. Get a table and an aquarium. Put the aquarium on the table if it can hold the weight, or put them in different places. Problem solved.
I would say it’s a bad idea because you couldn’t really see it. Just wouldn’t be practical in my opinion.
They actually design these…
I would say it’s fine as long as the table is not being banged all the time and it has proper filtration etc….
In ireland they keep chickens in a pen under the table to throw scraps in they think its a good idea . I also heard some familys upgraded to pigs sorted feeding out magic the irish
Victor Allen’s
I think it’s a bad idea because you’d need to do water changes, putting in or taking out supplies etc and netting fishes from the top of the aquarium and the table’s in the way
Depends is it easily accessible is there room to do regular maintenance and for all the filtration ports and access to outlets and lighting and such
Mostly a bad idea. From time to time I see where somebody has made a coffee table from a large aquarium, with a glass top so you can see the fish from above.
But having the tank that low makes it hard to work on the fish tank, hard to drain water out for water changes, harder to detect leaks before they have ruined your floor, probably impossible to feed the fish without removing, then replacing the tabletop each time, and, most importantly, it will be hard to see the fish.
I hear you saying, “But I can see them from above, through the glass tabletop.” That’s true, assuming you put little or nothing on that table. But Mother Nature has designed fish so that most species are very hard to see from above. This is because predators tend to hunt from above, so fish that are conspicuous are usually eaten.
Another problem is that if you have a filter circulating the water, which you should have, there will be ripples on the water surface, which also make it hard to see the fish from above.
