  1. Well try it — got grounds in your pots last few cups? Yes = no don’t use it.
    Did you know a plain old paper towel works just as well as a paper filter?(better in some cases)
    Just trim off hanging folds, its paper and will wick the water.

  2. I’m going to guess that you are using a basket rather than a cone filter.
    Yeah, you can use a smaller filter if you are making a smaller batch of coffee…that said, if you are making a full pot, I’d use the larger filter.
    As to the reusable filter, I find them to be a PITA and cleaning the grounds out is messy and can result in a clogged drain over time…while the main bunch of used ground gets dumped in the garbage (I am an urban dweller, so I don’t have a garden and don’t fish so don’t grow nightcrawlers) and the residual ends up being rinsed out in the sink and down the drain.
    I use a #4 Melitta cone filter and have for years, I prefer auto-drip machines with cone filters, these tend to make a much better-tasting coffee.
