I take Adderall, it’s helping, but it only works when I add at least one large cup of coffee. Does this mean the dose needs to be increased? Should I avoid caffeine when taking Adderall?

  1. Well, why it works when you had 1 cup off coffee? Good question. Coffee usually only has 90mg caffeine, a mild stimulant. I have asked another colleague, psychiatrist I’m friends with. He doesn’t know. Has 26+ years in psychiatry. He said, which is here say, wondered if you tools meds with morning coffee. Whether on immediate release or time release? Could be coincidence, especially if immediate release. Doesn’t mean dose increase warrented. Having 2 or 3 cups coffee/day is ok. Ensuring your blood pressure and pulse normal, which your doctor should be monitoring when you present for refill. A small amount should not cause any problems, like mentioned above. Now, 6 to 8 is different. 10 cups or 1000 mg of caffeine is too much, called caffeinism sp? Even for a patient not on any meds. So actually the answer is no, a couple 3 cups should not present a problem. Again, why it works with 1 cup of coffee, can’t explain, medically. I wouldn’t worry about your low dose caffeine consumption with Adderall. It is POSSIBLE, as medicine is not black or white, why is a good question. Maybe bring the subject up with your doctor at next refill. My patients on it or other stimulants, usually after stabilized, will let them call me for a refill if all is the same, every other month. No need to have a patient come every month. Just put script in computer. To note, I usually work fast track at ER, and not initially prescribe stimulant medication. May give a few days supply, after checking drug monitoring system to ensure your not early, and why the prescribing doctor can not refill prescription.

  2. I’m not a doctor so can’t give medical advice. However, I do think you should talk to your doctor! Everyone’s bodies are different so no one thing is going to work for everyone. I also don’t know anything about your life or circumstances that would help. Definitely talk to your doctor, they may be able to increase the dosage. Caffeine can interact with ADHD meds and make them less effective, at least that’s what happens for me. Like I said, talk to your doctor and get advice

Personal opinion? Talk to your doctor for one. Another thing is you should probably ask people around you how it works for you without you drinking coffee, they may see some improvement in general.
Does it mean your dose need to be increased? Maybe.
Does it mean you should or should not drink coffee with it? Maybe
    Again, talk with your doctor.

  4. Ask yourself how long you have been administering that particular dosage for. Once you figure that out and the length of time, make an enquiry with your doctor concerning tolerance and dosage increase. Adderall is very addictive and depending upon the type of adderall you are taking, whether it be IR or XR, your body’s dopaminergic system could be becoming progressively desensitised to the adderall. Personally, if you are needing to add a stimulant to a stimulant in order to achieve the desired result of the stronger stimulant, then it’s pretty obvious that your body has become accustomed to the drug. Either up the dosage or change drug.

  5. I’d certainly talk to your doctor, but it doesn’t seem unusual or unreasonable to drink a cup of coffee along with the stimulant especially if the combination seems to be working well for you.
