It’s easy. If you order a brewed coffee or regular iced tea with or without sweetener, you can go to the register to have a discounted refill if you have not left the store.
For every other drink, just don’t ask. Pay for a another ultra caramel Frappuccino like every other customer. Use the Starbucks rewards program for free drinks and use the Starbucks app for mobile ordering (which is awesome.)
If you don’t like your drink, don’t drink it all then ask for a refill just because you didn’t like it. Take a sip when you get it and determine if it’s good to you. Then ask the barista if you could have it remade or a different drink because you didn’t like the one you got. Not a big deal.
Also, tip your baristas.
In the UK, the situation is slightly different. You’re entitled to a free refill, without charge, so long as you haven’t left the store. In fact, they’ll usually refill as many times as you ask. If you’re a regular, and the baristas recognise you, they may even refill if you’ve left and returned – as I discovered to my pleasant surprise. So what I do is this: I always take my own cup, always pay using my Starbucks card (15 paid-for filter coffees = the biggest. fanciest free drink I can think of, 50 = Gold), always ask for a paper receipt, ask for my entitled refill, ask for any subsequent refills with my card and receipt to hand (and they’re usually given free, but I’m prepared to pay if necessary.) If I leave and then return, again, card and receipt out, and I’ll pay if necessatu, but usually don’t have to. Bottom line – if you always treat the baristas politely (and why wouldn’t you) they tend to remember.
I once asked why some offered multiple refills. They explained that they have to make a new batch of filter, every hour, and they’d rather give it away than just throw it away.
According to policy, you can’t get a refill unless you’ve already paid for the $2 coffee/tea and remain in the lobby of the Starbucks you bought it from. Baristas are very aware of who is in their lobby. Most of the time, the barista will recognize you if you come up for a refill. If you are a green member, you pay .50 cents. (.50 plus tax, depending on where you live) If you are a gold member, it’s free. The baristas are usually very okay with this. Because it happens often. They will scan your card, regardless of what level of member you are. Gold members won’t be charged.
Keep in mind refills only apply to hot teas, teas (without lemonade), hot brewed coffee and iced coffee (any syrup that is milk based costs extra, e.g. white mocha). Lattes and frappachinos can’t be refilled.
Well as long as it is *SAME STORE SAME VISIT* you can just ask for a refill. It is 50 cents. It is only on hot coffees or iced coffees or iced teas. *NOT* Starbucks refreshers, or espresso based drinks. And obviously not Frappuccino’s.
Starbucks does not offer free refills as a standard. But they are cheap…like 50 cents or something.
But if you are going into starbucks all the time then you should be paying with their app. Very quickly you will get “green status” or something like that and will be entitled to free refills on coffee and tea!
