  1. You can bring your own food.
Another thing I have seen done (although the success rate with this is bound to be tricky….)
Once on a trip from Dallas to El Paso, we watched as someone made a call to someone, and ordered barbecue to be delivered to the train station at San Marcos. They talked to the conductor to make sure that the train would be stopping for long enough for them to get off, pay, and get back on. And that actually worked. They had Texas barbecue on the train.

  2. If you book a sleeper unit, food is included, very nice meals with a choice of entrees, along with coffee, water and other beverages.
The food in the cafe, that will be like convenience store food for the most part, and will cost twice as much.
You can pack your own food, but not your own alcohol. I think you can have your …

  3. Amtrak is actively working to eliminate dinning services. You should plan on bringing what food you can. food is expensive and of dubious quality. Some dishes are reasonably good, others are worse than TV Dinners. Breakfast is on par with what you’d find at a hotel that offers a complimentary breakfast, except for the cost. For an idea of what to expect, there are lots of YouTube videos from people who have traveled on Amtrak, in both sleeper accommodations and coach.

  4. Based on the menus on Amtrak’s site, about $10-$15 for a lunch entree and $15-$25 for a dinner entree. It also varies depending on which train, one menu had one $39 dinner entree.
And yes, you can bring your own food and drinks on board.

  5. Yes you can. I have brought string cheese and summer sausage which don’t need much refrigeration. Pack a small cooler with a small blue ice.
Expect things to get better with Amtrak soon. Biden has an Amtrak station named for him. He rode for many years between Washington and Wilmington Delaware.
I only eat dinner in the dining car if I’m in a roomette. If I’m in coach, I do go for breakfast. Lunch I eat out of my small cooler. There is a snack bar on the western trains that is downstairs from the middle of the Sightseer Lounge car. You can get a hot dog, Pizza, or a hamburger cooked in a convection oven. Also cold beer or liquors at high prices.

  6. Nearly all trains have a cafe car; think 7–11 with premade sandwichs, bad coffee, snacks, etc at convenience store prices.
Long haul trains have dining cars comparable to dinner houses – think Applebee’s, etc.
Sure you can bring your own food that does not need refrigeration, unless you have a cold bag with gel packs.

  7. The answer varies widely depending on how you are traveling, sleeper rooms include meals, coffee, water, and one alcoholic (or not) beverage. Yes you can bring your own food, unless you are in a sleeper you may not bring your own alcohol. Menus and further info are available on the Amtrak website.
