  11. All caffeine levels are different depending on the roast of the bean, where the bean has been roasted, grown and the weather conditions and the origin of the bean.
    The lighter the roast the more caffeine it will contain. A light roast is 75 to 130 mg of caffeine. Medium is 65 to 125 mg and a dark roast is 55 to 120 mg of caffeine. Decaf has up to 3 mg. Hot chocolate and tea has roughly 10 mg of caffeine and an espresso has up to 45 mg of caffeine.
    This is solely dependent on how the bean is roasted, the type of roast of the bean ie light, medium, dark, espresso, tea, decaf and hot chocolate and where the bean is roasted.
    This has nothing to do with the cup size of the coffee cup, the flavor of the coffee, which coffee maker the coffee is brewed in, grounded coffee or pods and it has nothing to do with the water type in the machine.

    What kind of coffee? Robusta beans have twice the caffeine as arabica, but arabica tastes better. In addition, light roast has more caffeine than dark roast (which surprises many people).
    How was it brewed? Anything that forces water through the coffee will have more caffeine per water volume.
    How big is a cup? Cup is a volume measurement (8 oz, just shy of 240 ml), but it also describes any generic drinking vessel. I usually drink 10 ounce cups of coffee.
    Assuming we’re talking about brewed coffee, a typical 8-ounce cup has about 96 mg , or ~150 mg if it’s a 12-ounce (~360 ml) cup. The reason that’s useful to know is that you can get more caffeine by buying special brands. These brands advertise 400 to almost 1,600 mg of caffeine per 12-ounce cup. Since the recommended max is 400 mg per day for an adult, that’s… that’s a lot.
    I don’t know how authentic those claims are (I’m not saying they aren’t), but I like drinking coffee, so if I were to want to hit that amount, I’d just drink more.

  19. I’m sorry, this is really hard to answer in any meaningful way. Lots of things affect caffeine content, at least as much as the size of the cup:
    Type of coffee – Robusta contains about twice as much caffeine as arabica (the good stuff).
    Strength of the coffee. This is a matter of personal taste, and can easily be up to a 4x ratio from weakest to strongest. Slightly mitigating this effect, it’s unlikely anyone would drink an 8 oz cup of espresso or Greek coffee
    There may be other factors affecting the result, but brewing time is not one of them. The caffeine dissolves very quickly.
    But if you want a “typical” figure, ask the nice Mr. Google. He says it’s 91 mg in 8 oz of coffee. Just bear in mind this may be nowhere near the caffeine in the cup you’re about to drink.

  26. Nothing much to add to the response from “Drew”, above, other than “Use your calculator. Note the sizes of the beverages and you’ll get a rough ratio of the amount of caffeine you’re imbibing. As you’ll note, the chart shows the amount of caffeine in a typical serving of the named beverage. The sizes are all different, though. The key is in the number of grams of coffee going into the preparation and the type coffee used.
    A rule of thumb, by bean type….
    Arabica beans: about 1% to 1.2% of the ground weight
    Rustica beans: about 2% to 2.3%
    Most top espressos are 90+ per cent arabica, so use that number. Then calculate the amount of ground coffee in a pulled shot. I used double shots at 16 grams of freshly ground (95/5 arabica to rustica). At that ratio, you might as well use the calculation for arabica – but use the high one… 1.2%. 1.2% of 16 is .192 or 192 mg of caffeine for your “dopio” or “double”. As a single shot, that at 96 mg, so if you know how many shots go into whatever beverage you’re drinking, just calculate 96 mg x # of shots.
    Heck, round it up to 100. Baristas will overdo rather than scrimp, generally, and it’s a good rule of thumb, not even requiring a back-of-envelope calculation. 100 mg X number of shots…. ROUGHLY.
    Different roasts will have slight variations, but the real key is in knowing what’s in your cup. An Americano is shown as so low because it’s a single shot, maybe a shot and a half in some places, just watered down to make something similar in taste to an “American” cup of coffee like you’d get at Dunkin D or McDonald’s or a diner. .
    For drip or press coffee, the calculation also just goes to the weight of the coffee. It’s harder to know how much weight is being used in a McDonald’s or the diner up the block, but in the places I’ve checked, it’s actually very close to the weight per serving for espresso-based Americano. It’s a weaker coffee because the servings are larger but most of that “larger” is water, not coffee extracts. But a lot of commercially available “drip grinds” are heavy in the rustica content, so you’d get a higher caffeine content.
    Still… I’d use the 100 mg caffeine per shot rule of thumb. Brewing/steeping/expressing time, bean varietals, roast grade, etc… all can cause slight variations.

    Serving size : Large does not mean more caffeine in coffee. It all depends on the beans, how the coffee is brewed. There are too many variables. Your cuppa could have anywhere between 70 – 140mg on average with some coffee shops offering up to 700mg.
