  1. Based on my experience, it will be OK for a LONG time. The “canned coffee” I tasted seemed lacking in flavor BEFORE the “best consumed by” date. It seems to be a product that would not change much over time.

Provided the coffee is dry and untainted, potentially several decades!
James Hoffman has done it, so you (and I) don’t have to:
    Drinking coffee from the 1970s
    Drinking Espresso from The 1950s
I observe he is still alive. In both cases the coffee was sealed, dry, and didn’t have any apparent mold or the like. Bear in mind that ground coffee of course by design has a great deal of surface area and so is an ideal environment for all sorts of fungi, bacteria, etc.: in other words, it is not safe to drink very old coffee . Mr. Hoffman did it for performance, but do not imagine this is at all a good idea.
Moreover, coffee was not treated in the same way as it is now. This is sometimes generally referred to as “coffee culture”, and roughly what it means is that prior to the 1980s or so, in America and many other countries, people generally did not expect the same quality and enjoyment; it was enough that it be strong and wake you up.
You can see this difference with the two coffees he tries. The 1950s espresso was blended with some other additives, and the 1970s coffee was much more finely ground than we’d use today. Even if they had been fresh, the result would be extremely different than we’d expect, and probably pretty bad.
That said, there’s one thing both of these coffees – and every other case I know of in which someone tried historical coffee – share: they’re absolutely putrid. Even though the seals were unbroken, the resultant coffee was just utterly terrible. We don’t know if this was ever good coffee, and we don’t know at just what point it went from good (or mediocre) to bad, but clearly that point passed a long time ago.
    So, to sum up:
There’s no apparent point at which canned coffee ceases to be brewable.
    It might not be safe.
You’re definitely not going to get a good beverage.
Your best bet to enjoy really old coffee is to get someone else to drink it and watch the reaction.

  3. Best before is not equal to expiration date like you find on drugs or milk. Coffee usually is usable as long as you don’t see mold in the can. The taste and strength may not be at its best but I have seen people who can drink roasted and ground garbanzo beans and take it as coffee. So, I am not sure how much of a taste you expect from coffee. By looking at your question, i.e. asking about “canned coffee” I am assuming you are not a coffee connoisseur. So probably 4–5 years past expiration date coffee will not be that bad for you. You may have to put an extra scoop into the filter basket to account for weakened flavor but it should still be usable.
I on the other hand, would not touch anything coming out of a can, unless it has Illy brand on the can itself.

Ground coffee can be used for a few months past his expiration date; whole beans last 9 months; and instant coffee up to 20 years in the pantry. It can last much longer in the freezer. Coffee – How Long Does Coffee Last? Shelf Life, Storage, Expiration Date

If taste is your concern, your best bet is to store coffee in an airtight container somewhere cool, dry, and dark. Stored this way, ground coffee can be used for a few months past its expiration date, whole bean for up to nine months, and instant coffee for up to twenty years.
