  1. Generally, people don’t become addicted to coffee; it’s the caffeine in it.
    Caffeine is a stimulant to the central nervous system, and regular use of caffeine does cause mild physical dependence. A good example of this would be drinking 3 cups of coffee (or more) all week.
    But caffeine doesn’t threaten your physical, social, or economic health the way addictive drugs do.

  2. It can vary a lot depending on the person. In my case I become immediately addicted to coffee, even after 1 cup in one day. The next day I will be slightly sleepy.
    After 2–3 days of 1 cup of coffee, the next day I will be even slightly unmotivated to work the day I don’t drink it.
    Of course, after so few days, if the day I “quit” its a weekend day and I go outside, or I have a field day at work, or some interesting meetings and projects, then I don’t feel it.
    So I try not to use caffeine at all. Very seldom I do need it – before a sport competition or on a very bad day at work when I have to complete boring repetitive stuff.

  3. It’s a bit more difficult to notice coffee (caffeine) addiction compared to other drugs. Most people don’t know they’re addicted to caffeine until they get withdrawal. Usually an intense headache starts when caffeine is absent from the bloodstream for a few hours. Drinking a soda or coffee makes the headache go away. That’s when you know. It usually takes less than a week of a high caffeine intake to achieve addiction.

  4. Personally I just drink it for enjoyment or my ‘ikigai’ for the day. I’d say you become used to it after 6–12 months depending on how often you’re drinking it.

  5. Very few people ever become addicted. There a withdrawral type of effect if after regualr coffee drinking for a long time and then you suddenly stop, you may experience headache for a day or so.
