  1. I used to have this habit of drinking many cups of black coffee every single day. From personal experience, and from advice from my doctor, I can say this : It is a terrible idea. Black coffee, while good in its own way, is terrible if over-consumed.
I can understand the attraction towards black coffee. It tastes awesome, according to me coffee should not be adulterated with milk or sugar to preserve the actual coffee taste. It has only 5 calories per cup, when compared to the 400 odd calories of a white chocolate mocha.
But it is extremely dehydrating. It causes really bad constipation. And this is bad, because a lot of bad things can happen due to severe constipation. It affects going to the restroom. Too much caffeine was also bad for me in another way. I suffer from panic attacks. And caffeine is the worst enemy in those situations. Black coffee also affects sleep adversely.
Have black coffee, but not a lot. Try diluting it and enjoying caffeine at the same time.

  2. I like black coffe and prefer it over tea or Starbucks. When I go home, I find myself drinking a lot of black coffee as well, but this is also 3–4 months out of the year.
My grandparents who are 94+ drink 2–3 cups of black coffee every morning. I don’t know how they do it. So, if they’re still alive, I don’t see a problem w having 4 cups.
Do you drink 4 cups all in one sitting or throughout the day?

  3. I have been doing this for more than 50 years. I have outlived both parents, my younger sister, and my younger wife. I am 70.5YO and my MD says my blood chemistry is better than most of his 30YO patients. I am not concerned about coffee.

  4. Yes. After adaptation of adenosine receptors the caffeine is not a problem. Coffee shows some beneficial properties on cardiovascular health.
Unless You are pregnant or suffer some chronic disease there is no real harm.

  5. WEll, I’ve done it for more or less 45 years and I’m still here, cancer free, walking and talking.
You are really asking for a quantification of risk, and although various people are willing to give that an effort, none of the stats behind the effort that I’ve seen really stand up to scrutiny.
    Best of luck.

  7. Typical guidelines for caffeine consumption for a healthy adult is about 400mg/day. That guideline is designed to be on the conservative end of the spectrum in terms of what we know about how the body processes caffeine, since different people process caffeine at different rates, and have different responses to it.
When you say “4 Cups of coffee”, the big question is, what do you mean by “Cups”? If you’re really referring to whatever container it is that you use to drink out of, then how big is that container? A “normal” 8oz mug will contain anywhere from 50–150mg of caffeine, depending on what exactly you’re drinking. But a “Venti Americano with double espresso shots” will give 600mg all in one go. 4 of those is a different story.

Justs make sure you drink enough water every day too. It’s needed to expel waste from your body.

  9. 1–4, maybe. 1 is great, 2 for sure, maybe the 3rd late afternoon and 4th…..well, after a great dinner with good friends. Black, no cream or sugar. Opt for an organic blend.
