  1. Its done by the orange stripe around the rim of the K-Cup. There is also a device that can clip onto the 2.0 brewer that has an orange dot on it which causes the machine to read all K-cups as having the orange stripe, effectively hacking the machine.

  2. Each capsule has a metallic cover that gets pierced when the water is forced through to make the coffee. I wonder if there is some magnetic sensor in the machine that’s calibrated to a certain resistance. If the exact resistance isn’t met, the machine might decide it’s dealing with an impostor capsule.
