It’s called Espresso. A machine made coffee, in a small cup. You drink it straight up, in one shot. With or without sugar, or a sweetener.
I’m the morning, usually, you combine it with a Cornetto, a pastry that looks and tastes like a Croissant. Usually, people have their coffee at the bar, because sitting down at the table costs more money. And hey, it’s just a shot!
In Veneto, when it’s very cold, they drink their espresso shot with a shot of grappa. They drink the coffee first, then they pour the grappa shot in the cup, to mix the spirit with the coffee remnants. Then they have a second shot. This works as antifreeze in the Winter.
Some people drink another kind of coffee in the morning, called Capuccino. It’s in a larger cup, with a thick layer of foamed milk on top. But many Italian people don’t like it, because they claim that they can’t tolerate cow’s milk (after a certain age).
Finally, people make Espresso at home, in a special aluminium espresso maker pot, called a Bialetti moka pot, originally made by the Brescia based company. Nearly all Italian housholds (90%) own a moka pot.
We used to love visiting the cafes in the squares of the towns of Italy. In the morning, businessmen in impeccably tailored suits, expensive shoes and sturdy cousin brief cases, would enter, walk up to the bar, they never sat, and said,”caffe per favor”. The small cup would be placed before them, they would down it in one gulp, pay, say “grazie” and leave. The entire affair taking no more than 3 minutes. Caffe, especially in the morning for those on the way to work almost always meant espresso.
