  1. You can’t. When storing aromatic foods in plastic containers, especially for longer periods of time and at room temperature instead of under refrigeration, the volatile chemicals in the food will permeate the plastic. There’s no way of cleaning it, because the odors ate not on the surface. They’re embedded in the plastic, and will only slowly outgas, dying down over tone bit contaminating subsequent items stored in the container.
Just designate that container for coffee.

  2. I clean my coffee vending machines with a combination of lemon juice (citric acid) the cleaning product Simple Green which is food safe.
Stainless steel can be cleaned pretty thoroughly, but plastic just takes time. I usually soak smaller plastic parts in a solution of dish soap and water initially followed by a scrub with Simple Green and then a citric acid solution just to get any residual Simple Green off of it.
Sometimes it requires the use of a small steam cleaner as well. Good luck!
But the advice from others that its best to just dedicate the container to coffee is prudent.
Then again, I store bullet casings for later reloading in plastic coffee cans and it does impart a nice coffee smell on them… 🙂

  3. Plasic can hold on to odor very well .I personally would recycle it. Think about that coffe smell, how its still there . Now think of all the germs that can still be there. But if you want to the best way its to soak it in hot water for ten minutes or more. Wash it in soapy water rinse. Then soak it in a solution of bleach 1:5 rinse and set it outside until you can’t smell the coffee or bleach . And viloa your done and I’ve just gone and bought new ones . Actually I use old shopping bags for everything the only plastic containers I buy are from my yogurt . I’m green and plastic has yuck all over it . Just recycle it .

  4. 50% bleach 50% water solution to the rim. Let it there for a day. Then rinse and fill with normal water for a day. Rinse and you are good to go.
