My wife and I both definitely prefer unfiltered coffee. We have a Jura coffee maker and a couple French Presses. The Jura is a Swiss coffee maker which is essentially an automated French Press. We buy the Beans in 5# bags of Dark Roast Ethiopian about every 3 weeks. No cream, no sugar. The machine lets us select the amount of water, the grind of the beans and the amount of coffee for each mug. Generally set it for 5 oz of water and 2 Tbs of ground coffee but may go for an Espresso strength with 1.5 oz of water for a bit of Zip… A twist of lemon rind and a slice of anise bread toast to accompany this nectar of the Gods…
You can take the exact same coffee beans and completely change the flavor and character of a finished cuppa by the grind, the type of brewing, the temperature of the water, and the dwell time of the water on the grounds.
French press and other unfiltered methods have their place and the results are quite enjoyable if done by skilled persons.
Personally, here in coffee-land, we use a fine grind, 190–200 F (88–93 C) water, and pour-over using a choreador brew stand with a reuseable muslin filter. People rave. I do prefer this coffee, day in and day out, as opposed to the unfiltered. I guess that it’s the sludge in the bottom of the cup or something when using the French press.
Why? Just personal taste.
This is ground coffee
If you put this into a cup and pour hot water over it you have unfiltered coffee. With all those ground up bits in it. If you put it into a filter, hold it over a cup and pour hot water into the filter you have filtered coffee. No ground up bits in it.
I prefer filtered.
I own a Keurig coffee maker where I can use coffee pods or use a reusable pod that I can use bagged or canned coffee. Also any water that I use for cooking or drinking is filtered.
I started putting filters in the reusable pod and I could tell a difference. Always used sugar because black coffee always had a bitter taste. Since using filters I no longer use sugar (do like flavored creamers or sweetened condenses milk). The cleanup is a whole lot faster and using a filter prevents coffee grounds from getting into my cup of coffee.
Definitely prefer filtered coffee. Cuts out or down from any bitterness and improves the taste without so much need for doctoring.
I ( we) prefer filtered coffee. We are addicts to filtered coffee in South India. Our day does not start without a cup of good, home made, thick filtered coffee by about 6 am.
But in South India we take with hot milk and a little sugar to enjoy its bliss state with a little bitterness to linger in our mouths for a long time.
I have written a few answers on filter coffee and I will try to pull and post it for you.
Filtered coffee is a bit weaker than unfiltered, but I prefer filtered anyway because I hate the gritty sensation of coffee grounds in my mouth. Using a filter also makes it easier to recycle the used coffee with my other organic waste every week.
