  1. Turkish coffee goes by different names in different countries. In Romanian it is called cafea la ibric, in Tunisian it is called qahwa zazwa or qahwa baldiyya for example. So the term Turkish coffee is an exonyme not used within the languages of countries which have the tradition of making Turkish coffee.
    It is know as Turkish coffee in English, French and other languages of countries which were not part of the Ottoman Empire because of the Ottoman Empire where the Western Europeans took the coffee from. Traditionally in languages of Western countries, the Ottoman Empire is known as the Turkish Empire or simply Turkey. The first westerners to adopt the coffee from the Ottomans were the Austrians. The first coffee shop in Western Europe was open in Vienna. Thus the Vienneses are famous for their coffee. After that, it spread from Vienna all around the Western World. In the United States it is more common to be called Greek coffee, while in Western Europe to be called Turkish coffee as far as i’m aware of. Me as a Romanian I just call it coffee because that’s how we do it at home since ever.
    To make the Turkish coffee, you need a cezve pot as it is called in Turkish, or zazwa as it is called in Tunisian or ibric as it is called in Romanian. It looks like this:

    You put the ground coffee and sugar in the cezve pot filled with water and you stir and brew it till all the bubbles and cream desappears from the top. By brewing, the sugar gets caramelized and the ground coffee goes to the bottom of the pot and all the air from the ground coffee is released.
    If coffee grounds from the bottom of the cezve pot are poured with the coffee within the coffee cup, it’s ok and normal. You don’t have to filter those coffee grounds when serving in cups because those coffee grounds will deposit at the bottom of the cup. Some people after finishing to drink their Turkish coffee, they will turn the coffee cup upside down, wait for a while for the coffee ground to slip from the bottom around the wall of the cup. After that they turn the cup around and interpret the patterns made by the coffee grounds on the wall of the cup.

    I don’t know how it is called in other languages but in Romanian it is called “cafea la nisip” translated as sand coffee. It is said that brewing the coffee this way, it gives a special taste to it.
    Now although the Ottomans made the coffee famous in the West, the cradle of coffee is in Ethiopia. Ottomans took it via Yemen from Ethiopia from where it spread around the Empire. Ethiopians and Eritreans have a ritual to prepare the coffee which is so elaborate that it doesn’t even get near to how the Turkish coffee is prepared. Ethiopian coffee is for another answer though.

    It is drunk slowly as it it concentrated, in small cups not in the American way, deluted and in huge cups like this:

    Drinking Turkish coffee is a social activity to sit and relax drinking it slowly and chatting. It’s not to drink it quickly on the run in the morning after the shower before going to work as Americans do. So Turkish coffee is not just a coffee. It’s a lifestyle.

  2. We call it Turkish coffee, Greeks make a similar one that’s called Greek Coffee but it’s totally different than other coffees like Expresso, Cappucino etc.
    The making is also different.
    First you must find a fine roasted coffee bean.
    Then you crush it and make a coffee powder of it. Not too much crushed though.
    Also you can buy Turkish Coffee or Greek coffee ready to make from shops.
    For every cup ( that’s about 90ml, so a small cup ), you put 1 spoon of coffee and you slowly boil it up but stir at the same time. You can add sugar if you like, but better without the sugar. When it’s cooked you’ll see foam on the surface.
    Serve it in small cups ( 90ml max ).
    Now there are also Turkish Coffee machines ( Arçelik brand TELVE ) also sold. They also make a delicious Turkish cofeee with more ease.

    The world’s very first coffee shop was opened in 1555 in Istanbul under the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent. Other cultures such as Greek, Lebanese have copied Turkish coffee and tried to label it as their own.

  4. In 1683, Muhammad fourth sent his army to Vienna. Here the Turks we’re defeated by the Austrians. Leaving in hurry, they left the sacks of their coffee behind. At the time, coffee was unknown among the Viennese, however today they enjoy nothing more, then afternoon visit’s to coffee houses dating from that time. As always, Turkish coffee is accompanied by chocolate cake! To prepare, ground dark roasted coffee to powder and mix with sweetened water. Use long handled pot, called ibrik! Boil and pause thrice. Served in small cups! Between boiling I like to put it in fridge or even overnight, this is my own way, since I believe it improve the taste. Either way, the Turkish coffee remains my favorite..
