The purpose of the filter is to make the combination of coffee powder and water to slowly drip in order to bring out the flavour of coffee. Much like in the coffee machine where the powder is packed tight and water passed under pressure. Most coffee drinkers are not aficionados, just coffee lovers who can’t differentiate between high grown Colombian and North Korean (N. Korea grows a lot of coffee too and exports it). Therefore adding coffee powder to water that is about to boil, wait for 5 minutes,,sprinkle cold water and filter it, add sugar and milk is perfectly acceptable.,
Without Filter it can be made as follows:
take 2 tumbler water (250 ml) capacity totaling to 500 ml. Boil it. Once boiling point reached add Coffee Powder 4 table spoons and stir it vigorously. Sprinkle some cold water allow it to settle for 5 minutes. Then without shaking drain the decoction in a separate vessel till you get plain decoction without powder.
In this way you can make filter coffee, but it will be a shade less in taste compared to real filter coffee
Thanks for A2A,
Prior to 1920s or so there were no coffee filters and most households in those days used a thin cotton cloth known as muslin to filter the coffee. This process was easy and it could serve everyone (20 to more family members) at once.

This a medium coffee I prepared with 1/2 cup milk and 1/4 cup decoction to make one tumbler ( steel tumbler shown in picture)
If you wanted a strong coffee add a tsp of coffee powder in making decoction with same water quantity
Use freshly boiled milk and good coffee powder.
I used Narasus brand, Cothas, Kannan Jublee coffee, and Coorg coffee powder
If you use coffee powder containing chicory, like Narasus Instant, Green Label, one tsp of powder would be sufficient for 1 tumbler of coffee.
Ratio for making 1 tumbler of Coffee :
For medium coffee: 1.5 tsp + 1/4 cup water
For Strong coffee : 2 or 2.5 tsp + 1/4 cup water
