  1. Sungkyunkwan Scandal (2010) is similar in that there’s also a girl dressed as a guy in order to earn money, the main lead falls in love with her but struggles with his feelings because he thinks he has fallen for a guy.

  4. I agree with Esther — Sungkyunkwan Scandal (성균관 스캔들) 2010 — 20 episodes has similarities. What makes it different it that it’s a fusion sageuk . Fusion means — there are modern rom-com sensibilities or sci-fi/time travel effects added into a sageuk. [in this case it’s rom-com elements] Sageuk is the phonetic transcription of 사극 . This is a genre term for a historical drama or play. The setting, political issues, and some characters are historical. The main characters are fictional, and the rom-com elements are there to spice up the story and make it appealing to a wider audience but in many ways they are anachronistic.
Based on Jung Eun Gwol’s bestselling 2007 novel The Lives of Sungkyunkwan Confucian Scholars , it’s set during the reign of King JeongJo and is beyond wonderful. It’s hilarious, romantic, dramatic, and substantive if you pay attention to the economic and political themes.

Another drama with a girl masquerading as a boy is To the Beautiful You (아름다운 그대에게) 2012 – 16 episodes.
This is perhaps the craziest of all the dramas where a girl pretends to be a guy. This time it’s in a residential boy’s high school, and she’s on a mission. It’s a bit of work at first to climb on and find a seat, but boy it is worth it! It’s so, so funny, and touching. Sulli has the lead role.
FYI — SHINee’s Minho (Hwarang), Kang Ha-Neul (Heirs, Misaeng, Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo, When the Camellia Blooms) and Lee Hyun-Woo (The Liar and His Lover and Moorim School) are in it too.

There’s also Love in the Moonlight aka Moonlight Drawn by Clouds
(구르미 그린 달빛) – 2016- 18 episodes. It too has a girl masquerading as a palace eunuch of all things. It’s a wonderfully fun and romantic fusion sageuk. Focused on Crown Prince Hyomyeong (1809-1830) It has a happy, but pretty wimpy ending, given how much stuff happens in the second half besides the rom-com elements. Otherwise it’s fabulous!
It’s a coming-of-age story and youth romance based on the novel Moonlight Drawn by Clouds which was first serialized on Naver in 2013 and subsequently published as a five-part series of books in 2015.
