  1. Are there any 24 hour coffee shops in the Washington DC metro area?
Not that I’ve ever been able to find, no. There are some 24 hour diners – IHOPs, Denny’s, the aforementioned Tastee’s diner, and my personal favorite: Amphora . However, even the so-called “Midnight Mug” closes at 2am most days! There are a few purported coffee shops which are open much later but on closer inspection they’re actually hookah bars that call themselves coffee shops for cultural reasons.
I think one of the coffee kiosks in DCA is 24 hour, but that’s not exactly what you’re after I suspect. And I know that the one in IAD closes at midnight too!
But, sadly, there aren’t any dedicated places in DC to get a good cup in the middle of the night!

  2. Tastee Diner has been open 24/7 since 1935. There’s one in Bethesda, a block and a half north of the metro; there’s one in Silver Spring, a block and a half north of THAT metro. It’s NOT elegant. (The Silver Spring one has free wi-fi and a zillion electric outlets; I don’t know about Bethesda but I bet not.) Their third place, on Route 1 in Laurel, about 4 blocks north of Route 198, is a bit farther away from most things.

  4. Metromix claims the following restaurants are 24 hours–I’m not sure:

I tried, Yelp, but the only decent result was Kramers and its only on the weekends and I seem to remember it being kinda dark so rather difficult to study in the bar area–but something may have changed.
I do remember a Coffee shop which was open 24 hours about 4 or 5 blocks from the metro about 4 years ago–but it may have fallen prey to the economic woes of 2008 to 2010.
